Hey everyone! I thought I'd open this forum for those of us applying to Rio Hondo. Applications are right around the corner and it would be great to use this as a means of communication. Feel free to post, ask questions, or respond. I hope to hear from you!
From the stats of the alternates I wont be surprised at a denial letter. Seems they really do value experience over gpa, I'm actually surprised @Jesabvall2019 is an alternate and not accepted outright.
Planning on retaking chem this winter due to recency/preferred chemistry classes, and maybe trying to do Spanish on top of it. I'm gonna look into volunteering too. I cant afford to get a CNA cert somewhere fast, unfortunately. ?

I actually went through a program at my school. I know there are some down there too. It was literally half the price of a private including the state test. My program was 9 weeks and I’m not sure if that would work for you because I remember you saying you were a single mom.

Yeah I've looked into CC CNA near me and they are 2 semesters. so that's a whole another year lol. There are private programs like red cross but it's like 5 k. I going to spend some time and see if I can find an adult school that offers it. My problem is that calworks/gain wont recognize anything but nursing since that was my original goal. So getting them to fund it will be hard (if not impossible), and they'll want me to do an activity to stay on calworks (20 hrs a week), and any schooling but nursing wont count ?
I am a single mom of 3 boys but I'm fortunate enough to have some support from my family, my kids do receive free daycare/afterschool care. It's been a long journey but I'm not giving up. I am frustrated that having a bachelors seems to almost be a requirement for an associate's degree. I dont have 4 years to get one and be competitive, that's for sure.
Regardless, a wakeup call that's made me rethink my approach.

The counselor told me you just need a 2.5 to qualify they do not look at overall GPA just science.
Also I did my CNA at Rio Hondo it was 1 semester did they change requirements to get in? Cuz it was a first come first serve basis in like 2016

They use a points system, that they dont really publicize the rubric for. Very similar to other schools like PCC ect. That means people with a bachelors, experience, volunteer experience, bilingual ect get more points than someone without. They get pushed to the top, and they go from the top down.
Being at or slightly above the 2.5 GPA minimum is all great and good but you won't get into any school with a point system that way. Schools like ELAC will do a waiting list (2 years) and GCC will do a lottery with a chancellors cut. So you have a chance at schools like that with that kind of GPA (just making minimums) but not a school with a point system.

Citrus college does cna programs every spring and fall. I’m in it right now. They do two 8 week classes per semester, and 15 students per class... it’s first come first serve... turn in all your paper work and your in! It’s also very affordable as well.
classes and clinicals are Tuesday’s-Friday’s from 7am-2:30 pm
But if you don’t have time to do the cna I also recommend caregiving! Visiting angels is always hiring and you get a lot of experience there as well.

I got in the alternate list. Received the email at 7:36pm. I wish they would say how the alternate list works....is there a number we get in list of order? like a traditional waiting list?
Anyway, here's my stats:
-TEAS: 83%
-Science prereqs: 4.0
-Overall gpa: not sure since it's various schools,,,,but last 60units =~approx. 3.7gpa
-experience: volunteer hrs at community clinic ~400hrs
-life experiences: low income, first generation in college, hard personal circumstances (basically ticked all 3pts possible in this area)
-2nd language: Native spanish speaker
-Bachelor in arts degree
-I included my cpr BLS card for the heck of it, although I doubt it added any pts to me.
-----congrats to everyone who made it. I'm happy with this outcome and still awaiting other responses as well from LACC, LASouthwest, PCC, Santa Ana, Glendale. My top choice is perhaps LA City College based on location. Although I hear Rio Hondo has an excellent education system in terms of their ADN. I'm gonna show up at their orientation day on nov.1 and see what comes of it. ?
