Rio ~ Chem130 & BIO156

does anyone have any suggestions which would be better?

take chem 130 and bio 156 at the same time (16 weeks through rio)

or

split them up and do 1 at a time accelerated (8 weeks each through rio)?

i work full time and am a single parent, so study time is an issue.

I think one at a time, but I'd strongly suggest trying to make it into campus if you can. Many campuses offer night or Saturday classes.

156 is a lot to do in 8 weeks... lot of writing but if its your only class its not hard. I did it.

I am just finishing BIO156 and CHM130, accelerated online at Rio. There is a lot of work to do in each class and requires a lot of reading and writing. These were both 8 week classes, so at least 2 assignments for each class a week, and the labs.

Good Luck

Having taken both through Rio, myself, I would definately NOT take them at the same time. Especially if you are a single mom and working full time. I think you would go insane.... Those who do the accelerated classes are far better than me, as I tried and immediately switched to reg 16 wk format.

Chem didn't have a lot of writing, the essays were short answer or math problems. But there is ALOT of formulas to memorize and some of the labs can be quite time consuming. The thing I loved about chem was that the week ran from Monday to Monday, so the assignments were due on Monday, giving you a little bit of extra weekend time to complete them.

Bio 156, it wouldn't have been so bad if I had a better instructor. I just had a horrible experience in 156. There is ALOT of writing, and again, some of the labs can be time consuming.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi Jamij, I am curious to what you decided to do for the spring semester. I registered for the accelerated 8 week course in Bio 156 that will start at the end of Jan. I am still not sure what to do about CHM 130. After taking a couple of HCC classes online, I realized that I do much better online vs. classroom setting but the idea of taking Chemistry scares me with either options. Let us know what you decided. :nuke:

I am in my last week of the 8 week CHM130 class online, I used the online tutors ALOT. There are alot of new concepts to understand in the short amount of time. If you have no CHM background I would suggest the 16 week version or an in-person version.

a quick note to Sassiebaz- I just received your pm but was not able to reply - you may have your pm set to not to receive any message from members. Otherwise, I will post my experience here once I get started on Bio 156 online in Jan! Wishing best of luck to everyone who is taking online courses at Rio!!

The whole BIO department at Rio is crazy. Period. They like to thing they are your only obligation in college. Don't take more than one BIO lab class at a time. Especially at Rio. If your goal is nursing school and a BSN eventually, the grades you get in the sciences (BIO 201,202,205 and CHM130) are one of the things that will be looked at right away. Trust me, my GPA stinks up the joint because of my sciences. I am taking Chemistry to bring up my GPA and then Patho because it will help me a great deal. I am even taking the CRE101 course to help me with my NET scores. They were good, but could be MUCH better.

This may be a crazy question to ask but for those of you who have taken Rio online courses before - can you tell me if the course is set for 16 weeks, can you work & progress at your pace if you wanted to turn in your assignments earlier than they are due? I am signed up for 8 week accelerated Bio 156 for spring '09 but I am wondering if I should switch to 16 wks instead. Will they allow you to complete the program earlier or do they make you stick to their schedule? The course I am taking from PVCC right now are very flexible as in I finished my fall semester's work already ealier this month. I was hoping Rio's would be similar. :wink2: BoogsDad's post is making me wonder maybe the extra 8 weeks may not be a bad idea for extra flexibility!!!

Don't get me wrong, it is great that us busy people can get our lab sciences done online, but it is not great when you have your isntructors talk down to you. I loved my BIO 202 and 205 instructor, but absolutely wanted to chuck a rock at my BIO 201 instructor. Also, the one I had for BIO 202 initially was a creep as well. He was very rude and condescending. I transferred out the same day and was put into a different section immediately. When I told advisors about my issues with this sort of thing, they were not shocked at all.

Again, if you like having a life do not take 2 BIO lab classes at once. You will lose your mind.
