I have a question; why would the Unit Manager, the DON, and the ADON come together on a disciplinary issue with a nurse and when asked by the nurse: am i written up, suspended for 3 to 5 days, or terminated?, the response from the DON is: no, your not terminated; where do you all get this 3 to 5 days stuff from? you are suspended pending further investigation, so we'll call you and let you know. Now, in my defense, this has NOTHING to do with care of a patient, medication errors, or supervision of CNA'S. I just came back from suspension sometime in early Jan. for "not adequately assessing a patient." The patient's vital signs were ok the Physician was contacted to which he stated to "monitor the patient, push fluids, and call me if something changes." For this particular incident, i obtained the all vital signs the Unit Manager took the blood sugar which was 76, supplement shake was given with sugar to boost the blood glucose, which it did after 15 min to 96; and at no time was the patient unresponsive or in distress. Unbeknown to myself, I was written up by the Unit Manager and suspended by the ADON (who just happens to be her good friend) an hour later and told by the ADON that if I was a "prudent" nurse, I would have known not to have left the patient for any reason. During that time, I had just been transferred to that unit by the DON 1 week earlier. I found out today when I finally asked why i was moved and did my former Unit Manager ask for the move; she stated to me that there was no particular reason other than it was her decision due to a staffing issue. Tell me what you think please. I'm definitely not delusional to think that i will be employed by them in the next few days.
Hello. I also work in LTC and have mostly worked in LTC since becoming a nurse. I am so sorry for what happened to you. Your suspension is bogus. You did nothing wrong. If I were you I would look for another job otherwise they might go after your license. I was recently terminated from my job in an LTC facility back in January because of being very vocal about staffing issues, and the poor care patients were receiving at the facility. I reported the facility to the Department of health and my coworker warned me that they were going to fire me because I called the state on them. I have since found another job. Nurses are needed are everywhere. Keep looking and you will fine a better job with better managers that will value you and respect you more. I wish you success in all that you do.
WD - welcome to AN. I strongly recommend that you change your screen name here to something anonymous. Everybody & anybody reads these posts and you might want to fly under the radar. You may be considered a 'whistle blower' and nobody likes them in any setting.
At many places, it's quite easy to terminate staff 'just because'. Even more easy if you're wearing a big red target.
Change your screen name ASAP. JMO
Hope your new job works out for you.

Why are you all treating a blood sugar of 76 in an alert and responsive patient who was never unresponsive or in any distress. Most protocols in places where I have worked don't asymptomatic hypoglycemia if it's over 60.

Im constantly applying; just waiting for a call while I keep applying. It is really hard here in atlanta. Im already in the process of trying to start prereq classes for my RN so I can get the h*ll out of here. I never thought I would have it so hard here; its ridiculous. I honestly could have stayed home in Ohio, went back to get my RN then went to another state up north or out east; but thats all water under the bridge now. Gotta deal with the here and now.
