RIDICULOUS question but got to ask....

I am starting nursing school in August after completing all my AAS coursework over the past 3 years. This is probably one of the most ridiculous questions you have ever heard but, I have to ask.

Do any of you wear artificial nails or do you recommend or not recommend them in nursing school?

I am not a priss or anything like that, I work hard and play hard and have have hard working hands, I do everything from needlepoint t remodeling the house to working on the car, and yes I do this while in school and still maintain a 3.66 GPA.

My concern is with opening things and all during clinicals, we start our clinicals 3 weeks into the program, and if they frown up the nails, I am going to grow them out now. Responses would be appreciated. Oh ya getting really excited and nervous on starting nursing school! :roll

Get rid of them. They are an infection control issue. My local hospital has completely banned all articifal nails, my nursing program has also.

There's a huge thread about artifcial nails in General Discussion. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find it.

We weren't allowed to wear artificial nails in school. AT ALL!! I had a friend who's instructor did a "hand check" every clinical morning!

So long nails but a 3.66 way to go. Nursing school is a tough road. When you have questions and you will we'll all be here for you. Don't loss heart over your first bad test. The question never has the answer you want. :uhoh3:

Do you type??? you'll learn on the job.

Our nursing school said :nono: to them and like someone said earlier they are an infection control issue. I think it all stemmed from something that happened in OK and a L&D or newborn unit. If I remember correctly the baby died from nosocomial infection from one of the nurses who had artificial nails. The only reason that I remember this is b/c I was living there at the time and had delivered my dau at that hosp in 1994.

But, you can have them on breaks. I just got mine done yesterday but I know I will have to take them off as soon as I start working. I got them done for graduation tomorrow night!!!

Good luck with NS and no matter how tough it gets (b/c it will) don't give up. Come here and vent, ask questions, etc.

Have a great day!!

This is a good question. Artificial nails are a big infection control no no.. They also cause skin tears on the frail elderly. Nails should be short, neat, clean. Preferably 1/4 inch long. Good luck in school.

:Melody: your concerns are right. You will have alot of patient contact if you are in clincal in the hospital. Nails can keep alot of germs and bacteria under them.
