retaking hurst: worth it or not?

Published

So I took my exam today and did the PVT. Took me to my cc info. With all that's being said, it looks like I didn't pass.:crying2: I took hurst for a review class and thought it was good for content. However, after not passing, I'm trying to figure out if I should stick with hurst and re-read it or take kaplan? Please Help!

I have taken both prep classes. Both have positive and negatives.

Kaplan- Pro's Excellent questions, decision tree

Con's 8 classes, two of which are spent testing, not teaching, 6 classes on topics, two are preparation; poor content, weak support, expensive, educators are skills are hit or miss.

Hurst- Video's are awesome, content fantastic and presented in a memorable way(the Tennessee Accent), education materials a incorporated with the videos so your using all senses when studying(writing, listening and watching)

Con's limited questions.

I enjoyed Hurst. It is my style of learning. I would say things out loud to help remember the information from the videos. You can get a book of Kaplan question or try Saunders questions. When your looking for questions, make sure they have complete rationales. I wouldn't pay for Kaplans program. Just supplement Hurst questions with a NCLEx question book.

@branzilla: thnx for the info. I was wondering though if ur talking about purchasing the Kaplan review book you would find at barnes n noble

If money is not an issue start with Barnes&Noble. But your local library, Craigslist, Ebay, Amazon and Facebook are other place to check out to. So many nursing students sale those things you don't really have to pay for new books.

I totally agree, Hurst is awesome, but you have to follow and view the videos multiple times. I was shocked after watching some for the videos for the 3rd and 4th time, that I was still picking up valuable information. Kaplan teaches you on strategies, you can purchase one of their books for that. Stick with Hurst, you pretty much have to become obsessed or should I say robust in your pursuit of achieving your goal. Up until the day I was going for my test, I was listening to the videos. Try not to jump around from resource to resource, thats what I did before. I didnt give the material a chance to work.

I can honestly say, if it was not for Hurst, I would not have passed NCLEX. I took Kaplan, and failed.

Good luck.......get back on it, dont waste a moment.

~Try not to jump around from resource to resource~ I agree Kazza1201

@branzilla, thanks I know, because I woke up one day and thought I had moved into Barnes & Nobles.........I just wanted to hear someone hint at a possibly good book and out I went thinking it was the cure I was looking for......lol Nope, I finally realized that I had to read and absorb and that the material was not going to magically jump into my brain and stay there.......hehe

Prepping for NCLEX requires hard work........NCLEX aint no punk, you gotta respect it and do the work.

@branzilla @kazaa1201: thnx guys for the advice. I'll try and stick with hurst but purchase the online review. I did the live review so I'll check out the online.

Stick with what you have, go to one other source if you feel you must. Be careful of the tendency to buy a collection and jump from resource to resource without spending sufficient time with any of it. Good luck.
