Resign first or wait until I find out if I'm fired?

Published

I've been told I have a meeting with my supervisor and HR tomorrow, so I'm anticipating the worst, but not 100% positive I'll get fired. My supervisor could not really give me a lot of information, so, do I hand in a letter before they have a chance to fire me? I am supposed to work a 30 day notice, so I've written a letter reflecting that, with the usual thanks for the "opportunity." The one reason I am so hesitant, is I want to hear them out. I know of no reason I should be fired, there have been no incidents at work that I am aware of. Advice please!

I empathize with your situation, as I went through a very similar situation. My advice to you is to get out of there ASAP. They are gunning for you. I’m sorry you have had to go through this, but you deserve better than this facility, which obviously has some management issues.

i would wait, you don't know what is going on, especially if you don't recall doing anything to warrant firing

I think it's interesting that you automatically assume you are going to be fired, yet you can't think of any reason why you would be fired? That makes no sense. Are you wanting to resign simply to preempt the firing, or are you wanting to resign because you are unhappy in your job?

It makes sense to me.

Why else would HR be involved (if there wasn't a problem), why else would the Sup be so secretive? Why else would they tell her in time for her to sweat it out for a while?

Calliope and I belong to the same club, klone, and it's called called "The Pessimists"!

Like I've said before, "I leave work each Monday morning believing I'll be fired for something I did or didn't do during the weekend and every Friday I come into work to find my name on the schedule".

Good point, kakamegamma. I've been fired three times in my nursing career and won unemployment benefits two out of the three times,

Once again, as I've said before, "I would have won the termination contestment the third time had I not said to my supervisor, 'Go ahead- fire me!' ".

The adjudicator said, "You cannot tell your supervisor to fire you and contest it when he does!"

Good luck to you, calliope. And please, let us know how this comes out, you pessimistic kindred spirit, you!

The Adjudicator needs an enema for his lack of appreciation for humor.

Yes, very stressful. Verbal reprimand, they don't think I'm a good fit for my current position, but have made no effort to assist in any way, and the criticisms have been vague; I've decided to move on.

In the meantime, get a written plan from them. Get specifics for how to improve.

If they don't give you a plan, they can't very well say you missed fulfilling it. They will, though, or they will use any and every little thing to show what a rotten person/nurse you are.

Start keeping notes, start planning on how to collect unemployment, keep your license safe. Always have a witness when you deal with controlled things and at any other time you might potentially be in a compromising situation.

Be wise, take care of you, there is something better awaiting you and you can land on your feet. Best of luck.

Sounds like some is out to get you . Id just call in say Hey your work place is unsafe and quit . All that drama is unsafe for the pt truly . I have seen both sides people get fired and fire people . something probably happened that made managememt mad . God I hate the system

I agree with this. Hopefully you’re resume is out there and you’re interviewing. I left my last place. New boss had called me in to spank me for something ridiculous and didn’t even ask if it was true. I knew at that moment I was done there. The weeks I remained there were extremely stressful.

Onwards and upwards.
