Residents tagging along w/ an RN

Anyone think it would be a good idea for it to be required in their residency to have to tag along with a nurse for 2-3 days. It would give them an idea of what we go through. So they wouldn't go in and turn the oxygen off on a patient because they're satting ok now. (They have it on for a reason!!!) I along with other nurses are so aggravated with them thinking they know it all. A couple days to see the other side of it may give them another view. What do you think? Ever seen it happen?

I think that is such a wonderful idea that I wrote written recommendation to the management at a teaching hospital where I once worked just that! It didn't happen as a mandatory but most of the residents relied on us RN's anyway and naturally spent alot of time picking our brains and asking our opinions or asking what needed to ordered. That only happened during the first year, after that they grew farther away from us and didn't listen to our suggestions at all by the last year but that was what they should have done anyway. Perhaps they relied on us so much because it was a highly specialized area. Even if they did spend a couple of days with us they would probably forget most of it by the end of thier residency, they have so much to learn!

Medstudents tagging along beside -- or would it be behind -- nurses for a couple days during their training experiences??? I LOVE THE IDEA!!! I can't stop laughing about it! :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

Wouldn't that be a real riot of a day! Boy, I'd really have fun at work for a change if I had to have a medstudent tagging along while teaching him/her through "hands on experience" -- and not just mine, but making him/her get involved up to his/her elbows! ;) Now, that's a proposal I could live with! :chuckle

I think that would be a great idea, probably should be medical students in their third or forth year. I also think that nursing students tag along with medical students to see how and what it is like becoming a doctor and vica versa. When I was in graduate school this idea was considered but I think nothing ever came of it...It was going to include all health science center students (medical, nursing, PT, OT, Rad techs, lab techs) those students who have direct patient contact at least. I do not think it included dental students or dental hygiene students. I hope maybe one day it will be common for all health science students to be required to spend time following other students in other disciplines, as this would help change how the disciplines view one another....

Or how about having the med school require they have a CNA certificate? They can't doctor til they see what the effects of doctoring are.

We had anesthesiologists who would come by and dose epidural catheters and never say a word to us.

I have seen beaucoups of NG tube in trash cans, soiled dressings at the foot of the bed..no new one put back on....O2 tubing off, IVF turned off, grrrrrrrrrrr.

Hey I think we ought to have those leashes like toddlers have at Disney World to keep track of some of these docs.

i like the idea. i think a lot of docs are clueless as to what all we do. i also think a lot of nurses are clueless as to what they do.

such a simple idea but the results would go a long way.
