Repeating a course?

Published

I was wondering if I should repeat my A&P 1 class because I know I'm going to get a B or at least between a 3.0 and 3.4 which is definitely not good in Washington state. People get 4.0's all the time here. So should I repeat it to remain competitive?

if life happens then you need to deal with it or drop the course and retake it next semester. in california colleges you're allowed to drop a course up until 75% of class meetings are completed. so for a 16 week class you can drop the course until the end of week 12. if you go past week 12 and you need to drop the course because of a life event that causes you to be unable to continue the class, your school dean can allow you to drop the course with a w.

i agree with this. life does happen, and it "happened" to me while i still achieved the grades i needed. in the hospital (during the fall 08 semester), i rocked my sick 18 month old in one arm, with a book in the other hand. i'm a single mom as well, it can be really tough! but i manage to do what i needed to, even if it meant 15 minutes of sleep :)

i feel like my school is fair in the allowance of retakes where, you can only retake a class if you get a d or lower.

best of luck to all!

I am confused as to why some people on this thread feel it's ok for someone to retake a class with a D or F but not a higher grade. If the point of view is that life should not get in the way of you getting an A than I would think that this view would apply to someone that had a hard time and got a D or failed. Personally I think that everyone deserves a second chance to learn from their mistakes.

And let's not forget that the OP got a B! Which is a really good grade. I think it shows drive and dedication to want to go back and do even better. Those are two qualities I would want in a nurse that was taking care of me. In the end it's about making yourself a fantastic nurse. We can't be expected to follow the same path to this goal as we are different people with different lives. But in the end what matters most is that we learn the skills needed to the best of our ability so we can go on to be the best nurses possible.

Yep, you have it all correct. But the unfortunate truth is this is a very competitive endeavor, getting into nursing school. As such, people will naturally want to weed out the competition. In their minds, forbidding people to retake a course to make a better grade (and thus have better knowledge) does not equate to a better candidate. They seem to see it as a form of cheating judging by the sound of this thread.

I know this is true. However, while I have never repeated a course, I certainly know people who have. Smart capable people who I know would be great in their fields (not all of them nurses). But I do understand the competition aspect of it all. And obviously if the school she is hoping to get into won't consider retakes, it's best to stick with the B. But if they allow it, I say go for it. Especially if it will solidify your chances of getting accepted. Then you will have a stronger application and an even better knowledge of the subject matter!

nope, i don't see it as a form of cheating.

once again, i'm not complaining because i have nothing to complain about. my school is very fair with retakes. we are all coming from very different angles, so naturally all of our opinions are going to be different.

cheers!

I HAVE to repeat most of my NS pre-req's or the schools up here in WA, won't even look at my application. The competition is FIERCE up here...which is quite a bummer with the huge shortage of nurses here. Both of my inlaws are RNs and my father-in-law (who's now a charge RN, been doing it for 20+ yrs) is constantly working extra shifts, because the hospital is so shorthanded.

It bums me out that some NS entrance is based SOLEY on grades...what if school comes naturally to you, and you get amazing grades....but suck with people and the personality part behind being a good nurse? I understand they want you have mastered the material...but if you busted your butt and have a 3.9 GPA and someone else has a 4.0...they are going to take that 4.0 over that 3.9...sucks (so I totally get why you want that better grade)!

I struggled the first time around with pre-reqs...and I KNOW it's going to be tough this time too, especially since the schools I am applying to only alow ONE repeat of EACH pre-req (some schools here only alow ONE repeat period, whether its AP, or Micro, etc...just one class)...but I KNOW I can do it. I will be eating, breathing and sleeping AP, MICRO, CHEM... Good luck to everyone!

I also had 2 take 4 'c' classes over b 4 finally getting accepted n2 nursing school. Micro. A&p2 eng. And psy. And this time around received an 'a' in micro eng and psy and a 'b' n a&p. It sucked but I was proud of myself.
