Renown Hospital New Grad Question

Published

Hi,

I am a graduate from NSC but was licensed here in CA. Job market here for new grad nursing sucks, that's a given, but since I've recently spoken to a nurse manager of a hospital in my area, it was confirmed that the reason why I am not getting calls from the numerous applications I have submitted is because they are prioritizing CA new grads. I am a resident of CA but moved to NV for a year to become a nurse but now I am back, I'm having a hard time getting to the hospitals here. I was thinking of applying to Renown since it's about 3 hours away from where I live at, I prolly will have to go back and forth but if it would give me a chance to prove myself, then I am open to anything. I am wondering if someone knows how the hospital is with new grads and should I wait until I get my endorsement before I apply. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I graduated in May and my RN license is in NV. I have applied at renown (Reno) every month since last May and they have not called me. I did get a job offer from UNLV but I turned it down.

I was told by the nurse recruiter that they are hiring candidates with ties to the area. If you have never lived in Reno or don't have family there it might be difficult for you.

I am relocating there, but need to find a job!

Are you relocating just to find a job? If so then you may have trouble at Renown. I was able to get an interview because I had lived in the area previously and all of the recruiters and managers brought it up in the interview. They are really trying to retain staff, which is why they are not really hiring from out of state or LV. You might have some luck once you have a Reno address or you could try one of the psychiatric hospitals or LTC.

Renown is starting to be uninterested in people that are from California and come to Reno for work... Why? Because they pay a lot of money to train them, invest in them and then, not even 6 months later they go back to California. So they got smart. Unfortunate for some, but it's a way to decrease turn over.

We have moved to Reno and I am commuting to California for work! Currently I am making a lot more money but the commute is awful. I may continue my non-nursing job because it pays more.

I live just outside of Reno in California and would have no problems relocating to Reno once I have a job. I have spoken to several different people representing Renown Hospitals about opportunities that I may take advantage of given that I am a New Grad RN but with 20 years experience as LVN. I was told upfront that they would never consider me as I am not a graduate of any of the local nursing programs based in the Reno Area and never utilized any of the medical facilities for my clinical rotations. Doesn't matter that I graduated with honors or have letters of recommendations. I'm finding this is true also throughout California for the various RN residency programs- if you aren't a graduate of the local nursing programs that utilize the facilities offering the residencies during your clinical rotations, they are not going to even consider you. It is very frustrating as there isn't any jobs in my area. I realize that I will have to commute and possibly relocate but I can't until I have a firm job offering. I can truly appreciate where you are coming from. I'm beginning to seriously look overseas for at least a 6 month position just to get some experience- it is absolutely ridiculous...

I have been submitted applications to Renown monthy. A recruiter finally called me and told me to quit applying! I was told "We don't hire unless you graduated from one of our local schools" Wow.....

why dont you try for a rural hospital. Pay may be a little less, but you can get great experience. I just got my RN in 12/10, and I will be training in the ER in the next month. The hospital paid for TNCC, and ACLS/PALS . Renown is not the only hospital in town.

I have applied at St Mary's. What smaller hospitals are in the area? I don't want to work in a SNF or LTC. I am in a strange situation where I have another job that pays more than nursing so taking a position in a SNF or LTC just isn't an option.

what do you do that pays more? Do you like that job? What are the pro's and con's of the non-nursing job you have now?
