Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello nurses and nursing students,:)

I'm a new grad:grad: with a BSN. I'm currently employed in home health for two months and its been pretty good. I love my nurse manager and coworkers. The problem is, its not as busy as i hope for it to be. I only see a few patients a week. I currently have an interview next week for float pool registry position that is full time, without benefits. I've heard that registry pays a little more, but I'm a new grad and i don't really have much experience beside the home health. I wonder what the difference in pay might be between registry( for a new grad) and working regular hours. I feel so horrible for asking, but I am super broke right now and I need to consider my options. :nurse: What are some of your thoughts on this? Please post. Thanks

it totally depends on where/who you work for. some registry positions pay a base flat rate, no matter how many years of experience you have and others pay a certain rate depending on experience. if you want to do registry as a side job thats fine, but i would not give it up to take a registry job full time without benefits unless you are covered by another insurance. also registry can be unreliable, because you are not guaranteed hours like a full time staff nurse w/benefits.

Pay difference between working registry and regular hours? Do you mean pay differences in the registry position versus regular (more) hours where your currently work, home health? Or pay difference between registry and regular hours at the facility where you have an interview?

You would have to ask the interviewer (and it is OK to ask questions about salary). Anyway it seems if you get the registry job it could hopefully segue into being hired regular hours at that place?

You didn't specifically ask but kind of implied that you were concerned you didn't have much experience as a new grad? Are you concerned about your ability do handle the job?

All your questions, concerns are legitimate but you are kind of over thinking, over worrying. Calm down and take a deep breath.

If your only concern is money (which is fine) get it in writing when you go to your interview. What will my pay be? Can I expect to get a minimum number of hours a pay period? How many nurses are in your registry, how often are they canceled? etc.

It may be possible to do both jobs for a while? You could even offer to work every weekend at the registry position which would leave several weekdays open to do home health? (Not much fun for you but it will give your income a big boost!)

Thanks for your posts!

As a new grad I would not ask about salary until they are ready to make you an offer. Research what new grads make in your area, but I wouldnt ask about this at the interview. Too early.
