Registered for the Spring semester

I went to school on Tuesday and got my registration card from the nursing department, went over to the registrar, then to the bursar to pay my bill and get my schedule.

I'm in. I appear to be assigned to a section that goes to a hospital I've been to before (clinicals), and with a professor I've had before. In fact, of the three professors who sat me down to tell me I was getting the boot, she was the one who honestly said right then and there that she thought that faculty probably could have done more for me along the way to prevent what happened. I never used that statement in my own defense, though I often think I should have. Water under the bridge, I guess.

I am going to do what needs to be done, no sense in going back. Can't change the past.

I don't think giving meds this semester will be a problem. After all, what's the largest number of patients I'll get in clinical? Three? Maybe if I'm the med nurse for the day, they'll give me twelve patients? That's OK. I did 7:30's, 8's, 9's 10's, Noon's and 2's and 3's for 25 residents. Meds for 3 patients is a cake walk now. 5 rights, checking three times... sure no problem. And I've got my handy Palm pilot with Davis' drug guide on it for when they want to grill me about what I'm giving.

What's it gonna be, anyway? Protonix? Altace? Lasix? The occasional anti-seziure med? No biggie.

I would have liked to get more experience with trach care and the "right" way - the "school approved" way to do dressings, but I'll just do the best I can. We'll see. It's things like that I need to be concerned about... being careful to maintain asepsis and keeping the patient safe.

Academics - been through this content before and had a 90 average... so I can review my new notes and my old notes and I'll be fine. They're doing the exams on the computer in the lab now. I heard they've gotten even more absurd, and the lab gets really hot, and you sit elbow to elbow with your classmates, each student having different questions, and you cant go back. They probably limit you to an hour for 50 questions. They think they're preparing you for the NCLEX. Ha! Well I took an NCLEX for my LPN, and the room was comfortable, quiet, they gave me headphones and earplugs if I wanted, and plenty of room, 4 hours to do it, and I did not think the questions were all that absurd. Tough yes, rediculous, no. I passed with the minimum of 85 questions. They wanna do it that way, it's fine with me... I'll get a new letter from the Center for Students with Disabilites that says as a student with an LD, I've got rights to accomodations... more time, quiet atmosphere.
