Try starting with MicroSoft. They are the company that makes PowerPoint. A Google search will turn up thousands of links with tips. Also, look into what the school has available. There may be resources that explain how to use PowerPoint. Also, if you feel your computer skills are lacking, look into a course on computer literacy.

As SWR above said, Microsoft is a great place to start for tutorials. Here is one that applies to PowerPoint 2003, but can get you started. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/create-your-first-presentation-RZ001129842.aspx

My general rules for online presentations is skip the transitions (how one slide goes on to the next) and text animations.

Keep the slides simple and condensed. Your information should be primarily in the notes that go with the slides, which you will turn in as part of the presentation, and the slides should simply be more of an outline.

Use images carefully and more frequently than not to grab the readers visual attention. A slide with an image and a nice bullet list is much less tiresome than a slide packed with information.

Garr Reynolds has a blog and a book that discuss how to "zen" your presentations. You can check out the blog here http://www.presentationzen.com/

I have done many presentations in the last few years with my online program, so feel free to private message me here and we could exchange emails. I would be more than happy to help get you through the first one or two :)

If you have a Mac, use Keynote. It's easier, more elegant, and did I say easier? And you can convert it to PP prn.

Seriously, one of the worst things about PP is that it's expensive. It's usually bundled with Word and Excel for abut $400 (the equivalent Mac bundle for Pages/Numbers/Keynote is...$79.95, or it's bundled on your new Mac), so if you have those on your PC you have it already. Check out online tutorials. It's not really that hard.

I use Garr Reynolds books. They don't teach you the software, but they give good advice on the overall use of visual images and how to convey a message through a slide format.

You can get the entire Microsoft Suite as a student through your school for less than $100. I have also been told to use Keynote, however I don't work on a Mac so I have to go with the old stand-by.
