Refresher Course

A majority of will hospitals require a refresher if you have not practiced within 4 years. Even though you have just passed your boards you graduated a few years ago you have not practiced at all as a RN.

Refresher courses range in price from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. Check local nursing schools for classes. Or the BoN for a list of approved courses.

Try the NY State Nurses Association. Looks like cost in NY is about $1000

South nassau communities in oceanside. That doesn't make any sense. Going to school so long and now u have to deal with this. I don't need refresher I remeber everything. I thing it's crap. No matter how many years your out of school as long as u have what's required you are fine.

However if you have not practiced as a registered professional nurse since graduating, the refresher course is a good idea as it includes usually at least 80 hours of clinical time. This refresher course is not just about remembering the theory and textbook knowledge but the actual nursing skills required of a nurse both in a simulation lab and clinical setting.

Many states require a refresher class if one has not practiced nursing actively in the past 3 or 4 years.

Everyone forgets if they are not using the knowledge and practical skills on a regular basis. In previous posts you stated graduated 5 years ago, but didn't pass the NCLEX and gain a license until March of this year. That is a long time to not use clinical skills required of a professional nurse.

It is understandable and realistic that hospitals would request that anyone in this situation (whether the delay in practice was because they took off 5 years to take care of family and then take the NCLEX/apply for a job , were ill and took time off, worked towards passing the licensing exam for the past 5 years, decided to join a mission, or decided to take a 5 year hiatus in Hawaii) to take a refresher class with clinical practice to ensure that you have recent skills to safely practice as a registered professional nurse. The textbook knowledge is only one component of qualification; recent clinical experience (whether in a clinical preceptorship, externship, another nursing job, or recent graduate from nursing school) is a critical part of being a qualified nurse.

I'm sorry that you feel that this is "crap" but at least the hospital was kind enough to let you know what is needed to be considered for a job rather than just simply reject your application as unqualified.

One suggestion: Try contacting the school you graduated from perhaps they may offer a low cost nursing refresher class for alumnae like yourself. I know a few schools offer this for their graduates. Many nursing programs are more than qualified to do refresher training plus the school has a vested interest in not only their graduates to pass the NCLEX but also to gain employment as nurses. ****

Ohh okay. Not to mention they give you training and orientation based on their hospital values and missions. The only logical reasoning I can get out of the refresher course is that they want you to have "updated" information and knowledge, not that much has changed since you have been in school, but I would understand if they allowed you to take the course while you are employed there.

She wanted me to get it before I get hired. The reason why she said that because she ask me for clinical references from my instructors and I tolded her I graduated 5 years ago then she told me I need a refreasher course before I can get hired. Maybe if I didn't open my mouth she wouldn't have mention it.

I know Adelphi offers refresher courses. Did you find one yet?

You can email me at [email protected] I would appreciate it. No job yet but I know one will come soon. The refresher course are too expensive and I don't have money for that right now. Sometimes they cost 2, 000 dollars that Is a lot.
