Hello. I'll be brand new in a school nurse role. My previous experience in nursing is adult orthopedics so I'm hoping there are some informative reference guides/books that will prepare me for the different types of illness, signs/symptoms that I will most likely run into as a school nurse. If you are working in this field, please let me know if you've found a useful book or reference (3yr olds-13 year olds). Also, where do I find standard forms that I may need? Any other information would be much appreciative. I'll be the only school nurse for a whole school so I will only get limited information during a short training. I'm excited about this change but I also want to as prepared as I can.
Thanks for for any advice!

Here area a bunch of resources from Missouri. I don't know what state you are in. I would goggle around and see if your state has comparable resources. Here is the link to check out- Guidelines & Publications | School Health | Health & Senior Services . Welcome to our group :0

The Clinical Guidelines for School Nurses is fantastic. There's a new edition this year. (I have the 2013.) I also used it to help prep for the school nurse certification exam.
It is a little pricey...

There are a couple that are the standards of school nursing practice:
Scope and Standards of School Nursing- ANA/NASN
School Nursing Textbook-Selekman- This is your bible!
Managing Diabetes in Schools-NASN
IHP for the School Nurse-Sunrise river press. This book is currently under revision for the next edition and should be out next year.
--These are all available from NASN, and probably Amazon
NBCSN (National Board of Certification for School Nurses) has a handbook of recommended resources for studying for the certification exam. While as a new school nurse you are not quite ready to take this exam, it is a great list of standard recommendations for school practice. Page 24 is a great start for you!

If you join NASN, this is a lot of great material and many resources there

I am not sure what state you are in, but we have the New York State Center for School Health Website. It has a "school nurse tool kit" with sample letters and notifications, along with a ton of info in general.
