Reference materials?
There are a couple that are the standards of school nursing practice: Scope and Standards of School Nursing- ANA/NASN School Nursing Textbook-Selekman- This is your bible! Managing Diabetes in Schools-NASN IHP for the School Nurse-Sunrise river press. This book is currently under revision for the next edition and should be out next year. --These are all available from NASN, and probably Amazon NBCSN (National Board of Certification for School Nurses) has a handbook of recommended resources for studying for the certification exam. While as a new school nurse you are not quite ready to take this exam, it is a great list of standard recommendations for school practice. Page 24 is a great start for you!

No Water at Lunch?!
You might want to check your school's wellness policy. By federal law there must be a wellness policy, and states must have a model policy. Our state requires free water be available at lunch. this may be federal part.

How do YOU check for lice?
Just because she had a cup of something, doesn't mean she had lice. Got to keep in mind that not everything on the head is lice, plus, lice clinics stay in business for one reason only, to find lice. Without a microscope, if you do not have years of experience, I would guess they were probably not lice. Maybe dead nits, but they are not dangerous. even a strong case of lice rarely has more than 15 live lice on a head at any one time. And they are hard to find! Moms and those who get paid big bucks have must more invested. Your job is not to find any possible louse. I often miss them in my quick checks. Ok, I move on. Believe it or not, regardless of what parents think, lice are not the end of the world. Sound like you did eveything I would do. I is really hard to see viable nits. they are much darker brown than the hatched white nits. I often cannot find viable nits, especially on brown or black hair. Just cause susie has nits does not mean susie has lice. My best guess, the cup was full of dead, hatched nits and she actually no longer had lice. Sounds like you did everything right to me!

School Nurse is a Lonely job
I'm a rural nurse, the only nurse for the district of 4 schools, with no other school nurse for over 50 miles. I agree with you, I am totally on my on. The best decision I ever made was to join NASN. I then had a home, with folks to help me, policy, procedures, journals. Worth every penny!
