I received the following email today from a RN/friend that I worked with and I am ticked! I cannot believe that this is making its way around the world wide web. At first I thought that they had just misused the word experienced and graduate. Or that perhaps they should substitute "experienced" for "burned out" or "incompetent" and "graduate" for "competent". Then I thought this email serves absolutely NO good purpose. It is just another symptom of the bigger problems in Nursing (have you seen one of these for drs? firefighters? police officers? etc?)

OMG....how crappy is this....so since I have experience I am automatically considered burned out? How ignorant is that....I agree with you ...it is ridiculous.:angryfire
It says more about the "experienced" nurse than the "graduate". I think most experienced nurses can relate to it, and how we began our careers with so many ideals -- most of which have fallen by the wayside now that we have experienced the reality of nursing/healthcare. It's neither offensive or representative of burnout to me. But then again, I'm no longer a "graduate" nurse...
I think the point is: newbies may see things in "black and white", while the more experienced nurse has been around long enough to understand the finer shades of grey. Sometimes it really does take experience to see the complexities of a situation, honestly.

I agree with you. It's ok if I poke fun at myself but it's not ok for others to do so..IMHO. And allowing this to be "funny" invites more things to be "funny" about our profession. Eventually, we become immune to the lack of respect these type of things envoke.
Just really not in good taste. IMHO AGAIN.
Im a GN on a floor full of experienced nurses and the email is funny to me because somewhere deep inside there is some truth to it. It is not a personal attack on anyone and if you dont think its funny delete it. One major thing that I have learned about nursing is the use of "gallows" humor. But not everyone has the same sense of humor. Sorry you got so offended.
I thought it was funny, and a little true!! Chill out, no one really attacked you!! And yes lots of other jobs have the same type of jokes..lazy cops, mean surgeons... big deal!!! And, any "lay people" I have have ever talked to have much respect for nurses and always say that they could not do the job! So relax!!
I'm a fairly new nurse (9 months) and I thought it was funny.....:)

I see how this can be funny to an "experienced" nurse but also very bewildering to a nursing student and/or a Grad nurse.
