Thank you's - memorable ones you've received?
Hey, don't feel bad, we all have bad days, especially when new. When I was a nursing student (19 years ago) I tried to remove a dressing around a biliary tube drain, it was taking to long to get the dressing and tape off so I decided to cut the dressing. What i didn't realize was that the drain tube was looped under the dressing and I cut it clean off, I had already had probs that day, letting an IV go dry and being written up for having a blood drop on my nursing shoes ( rolling eyes) so I freaked. Thank God my preceptor saw me in tears cuz I thought he was going to have to have an new drain put in and I was going to flunk my clinical. She showed me how to cut both ends of the tube and basically screw them together to repair until it was removed the next day. Sometimes I think it is the actual preceptor of instructor that makes us have brain farts cuz they make us nervous. And once you make one mistake an avalanche is not far behind due to nervousness when you are first starting off in the field. You got a thank you so you must be doing ok!! Kellie

Sometimes that is exactly what it feels like , but life continues on and I am not willing to lie down and take it. I have so many people ask me why I don't go on disability, the reason is that I believe I am an excellent nurse. I love my patients and they love me, so why would I waste such a God given talent? :) thanks for you concern and support!!KEllie

Nurses don't have a hard job
I completely disagree, although a soldier may have a harder job. I believe that we definitely have a tough job although I love what I do. I was only mentioning the ignorance of others regarding the quantitiy of expertise and quality of our care for their loved ones!

Amen sister, I feel ya!! I am currently on nights too, as well as have been a supervisor who managed nights, and I understand completely when you are talking about the understaffing of night shift and the extra responsibilities

Nurses don't have a hard job
I literally had a guy have the nerve to tell me that nurses don't have hard jobs. When I said I was tired, he asked "from what? All you guys do is sit behind a desk and write" I was so outraged I don't think I could even answer with a coherent word. I went thru alot of the things we have to do to ensure our patients health, assessment, and safety ( not leaving out cleaning up after incontinence) and he shut up quick. I asked him if he though putting on hip waders and elbow length gloves to clean up a patient who has had massive diarrhea incontinence sounded like an easy job to him. Kellie

Throughtout my 18 years of nursing my jobs have ranged from working on the open heart ICU unit to nursing home positions in administration. I love the people I care for and it was wonderful for me recently. I have suffered due to an attack which occurred in 1997 and have been working in a ambulatory walk in clinic which also has chiropractic and alternative medication. Anyhow I have always believed that we as nurses are their advocates, that when they leave it continues to be part of my job to call and see how they are doing, to make suggestions that may help to ease their everyday lives and that is what I do with all my patients. Recently I had to leave my job and have another surgical procedure, (this is my 15th surgery to repair the damage of a severe rape and assault), my employer graciously laid me off and I never got to tell any of our patients I wouldn't be back or wouldn't see them. One week later someone knocked on our door, and their stood a floral service delivering me a boquet, balloon and stuffed mouse with the word "Thank You" inscribed on his cute little belly. They were from a gentleman who hates having tests and going to the doctor. I had nagged him into finally having a colonoscopy due to his risk factors. He went and upon recieving the results of his test, found that he had colon cancer, due to catching it in it's early stages the cancer was removed and he is doing wonderful.. Those flowers and stuff were from him and his family, with a note thanking me and praying for my full recovery. It is a awesome and wonderful job we have lady's! Saving lives, how cool is that?! Does a medical assistant have to be certified or can a nurse who's license has been suspended be a medical office assistant until she is reinstated in Illinois?

need advice RE: disclosing board monitoring
I am currently going thru serious issues with the state of Illinois board of registration. I have felony convictions for paraphenelia and possession of controlled substances in 2002 and 2003. I had not been practicing nursing at this time knowing i was a practicing addict. I went to treatment and have now been clean and sober for over 2 years. I got my license renewed without any difficulty and when I asked the board (over the phone) I was told that since it did not affect my work that I would not be under investigation. I worked with a nurse who didn't feel that i should be allowed to practice since i was an ex-felon and took it upon herself to have my license investigated. I was sent a letter (apparently) to my old address and was unaware I was to appear before the board, my license has now been suspended indefinitely, of course I am going to appeal and am just getting started with phone calls. I have been having my employer urine test me since the beginning and they support me since I have been honest. I just don't know what to expect to happen next. This is my fault, I should have changed my address or been more knowledgable as to what else to do or who else to ask questions of I guess. Right now I feel powerless. Can anyone tell me what to expect next?

New Nurse questions Illinois nrsg monitoring
Hi, My name is Kellie, I have been a nurse for 18 years in Illinois. I currently work in a Physicians office. Can anyone tell me if they know what parameters a medical office assistant works in. What I have found is that they can do ANYTHING a physician directs them to and takes responsibility for. Does this include IV's? Illinois Prof. Board of Reg tells me it is not under their jurisdiction. Just looking to see if anyone has any other info.. GLad to meet you folks.... Hope to get to know you all better and exchange some info in here.
