:uhoh21: But what it an MDS coordinator? I have heard of MDS before, but I don't know what it is, and I have tried to look it up, but MDS stands for lots of things and I just feel really dumb that I don't know what it is. My friend told me she is thinking of applying for a job as an MDS coordinator, and I was too embarassed to tell her that I don't know what that means!! Please help me feel smart again!!!!

MDS = Minimum Data Set

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NursingHomeQualityInits/Downloads/MDS20DAVE2FactSheet.pdf

The Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessment plays a key role in many nursing home activities. It drives resident care planning, generates publicly reported quality measures published on the Nursing Home Compare website, provides quality indicators (QI/QMs) used during survey and certification processes, and generates payment for care and services through the Medicare and, in some states, Medicaid systems.

If you love paperwork, you should join the Army. It FLOATS on a sea of paperwork.

The MDS nurse is in charge of assessments on each patient. We assess them when they come in et based on our assessment findings are payed by Medicaid et Medicare. If they are Medicare, an assessment must be done at 5 day, 14 day, 30 day, 60 day, ect until they are no longer considered skilled. Depending on how much care is given to the resident, any IV's given, et therapy services provided, they are put into what is called a RUG catagory. Each catagory has a specific money amout assigned to it paid to the facility for each resident per day. At my facility, I am also in charge of the Skilled Charting et making sure that it gets done. We have two MDS nurses et the other one is also in charge of our Restorative Nursing Program. Hope this helps!

Thank you!!! Minimum Data Set was actually the only thing I thought it could be, but I for some reason was sure that was wrong! I knew it had something to do with nursing home admin, but I wasn't really sure. You guys are great! Thanks again!!

Can I just walk in and get the job? Don't I have to do some kind of basic training first like everyone else in the army? Seriously, if it's that easy I would TOTALLY do it.;)
