Ready to leave Med/Surg Tele, suggestions please?

Hello,

So I have been a med surg tele nurse for 3 years now, and I'm 100% burnt out. Time to switch specialties! Any advice on what is better specialize in?

I love - performing skills. I don't mind running around, I love being with patients and assessing them. I love knowing all I can about them/what's going on with them.

I hate - The insane amounts of charting in med surg tele. The customer service of med surg Tele / having to act like I have time to get ice water/ new blankets.. I want to be able to be honest and be able to truly prioritize. (My CNA doesn't answer call lights ever only me.) I don't mind being stretched thin and running all over, but don't expect me to do loads of charting and get turns done q2h, reassess pain right in the time frame, be a waitress and pretend I have time.

Specializes in ED.

That customer service BS is everywhere, no avoiding it. I've only ever worked ED and I'm partial. There's a load of crap there too. Pain reassessments, leadership rounding, reducing LWBS, was your call light answered quickly, etc...a looot of BS. I'd never make it on the floor though, far prefer ED.

I'm in awe you made it 3 years lol. You can really go so many places with that experience. Tele is rough, I've been in 6 months. My manager told me if you can make it on Tele at least a year, you can make it on plenty of other units.

I'm aiming for ER myself. I've learned I like have different patients every shift and I love in that in the ER (I did my capstone in the ER) that it's much, much easier to tolerate rude patients and family knowing you most likely won't see them again the next shift.

See if you can shadow units your interested in! After 3 years on Tele, you deserve to be on a good unit with a good team. Maybe you will even land some where you can manage a 15 minute lunch break not charting at the same time lol. One can dream...

Why do you say you would never make it on the floor? I'm HIGHLY considering ED, but I have no idea what to expect

Haha thank you! I appreciate that. :) yes maybe ed. Tele is all I have ever known!

Specializes in Case manager, float pool, and more.

I enjoy floating. Yeah, you get BS not matter what but I like it. ICU could be an option too based on what you posted.
