Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2011

Published

Hello all,

It's almost that time of year again! I'm applying to the 2011 class which the application period begins this November 1st. We have two months to prepare our applications! Anyone else applying? I've seen the support the last year's class has with this sort of thread and I figured there should be one started for 2011 applicants. What is your TEAS score? GPA? A&P I grade? What were the averages that the 2010 applicants had and they are now starting the fall 2010 program?? Good luck!!!

I am already looking at RN-BSN programs too.

I think the ranking/lottey system is never going to be perfect. It may create diversity, but I think they should consider more than just three statistics. I would be in favor of an interview, some people are far from professional and that is apparent the first day of class. Also if you have a strong medical background, but maybe not the greatest GPA, I think that should count for something. A high GPA is great, but I had a 4.0 student in one of my pre-req classes that couldn't cut it as a Nursing student and dropped after eight weeks.

I think how you carry yourself in a professional enviroment, your experiences, what classes you have completed (co-reqs) and your grades should all be weighed.

Just my two cents. I feel for the student with good grades, that is one spot away from coming off the waiting list, has to reapply the next year; while a mediocre or poor student makes it in with the lottery. I just do not agree with that.

I agree that taking more factors into consideration would be good, but looking at it from the CC point of view, why would they go through that time and trouble? They're filling their classes without a problem and they're graduating students with a pretty good NCLEX pass rate. They must think that their screening process is adequate for picking out those that are more likely to be successful (ranking) while offering an opportunity to those that may have had trouble in one or more of those areas (lottery). Adding interviews and letters of recommendation, etc. would mean a longer process for everyone. I think that a ranking only system would be preferable, (especially if I were on that waiting list) but for now it is what it is. Good luck.

I'm in my 3rd semester and I believe they definitely need to interview potential students. There are a few people that should not be there. Some are literally mentally unstable and some are great in class but clueless in clinical (still!). These people take up space for the ones that should be there. BUT how do you go about figuring that out?

interviews. On a side note: Letters were sent out to people last weekend (March 19-20th) that were rumored to be rejection letters. One person in my A&P 2 class said they recieved a letter that stated they didn't meet the requirements. She claimed it was due to a missing grade. Not sure if these letters were a flat out rejection or a notification of a last minute chance to send in the missing paperwork. I heard a rumor from a classmate (who has a friend in college admissions) and stated if you didn't recieve a letter that weekend you can assume you were accepted. The classmate also said the acceptance letters will be out April 8th. Not sure if he meant they will be mailed out April 8th or can assume they will be recieved by the student around April 8th. I called college admissions myself and was told acceptance letters for NVCC will go out within the next two weeks or so. (this was on March 25th). However I spoke to the nursing director that same day and she told me the acceptance letters won't go out until mid-April.

I just wanted to know before April 10th at 11:59pm so i know what classes to register for!

If you get into a nursing program and you accept then your seat is saved. That reg deadline is not for the nursing program.

seems like everyones got the same plan as me as soon as they finish this program... im also planning on doing a rn-bsn program at ccsu as well as a masters there. they work with the new britian hospitals so if u are a ccsu student the hospitals pay sum of ur tuition but ive heard alot of working nurses who go back to school can get some of their tuition paid no matter what college you choose. and as for the acceptance letters/notifications im sure its either this week or next week that we here something. i had a friend that was mailed her rejection letter already on the 21st. idk about the whole if u havent been rejected yet u must be accepted thing. sounds way to good to be true. lol i just dont wanna get my hopes up. really looking forward to the next couple of weeks worth of posts on here.

the letters that were mailed last week (I know because I got one) stated that you had X, Y or Z missing & gave until March 28th (today) to challenge the document by sending a letter back. SO, in a case like mine where the college failed to post transcripts on the RN status update page that admissions had already transferred in, the challenge is valid & my eligibility was changed. I was told that after they receive all of the letters from students & evaluate them, THEN the letters would be sent out.

I applied to Capital and I've been checking this site everyday for any updates. Any bit of information (even just a rumor) makes me feel better! Does anyone know how many people applied to the CT CC nursing program last year (in general or specifically for Capital) or if Capital usually has a short/long wait list? I'm guessing there's going to be A LOT more applicants this year, especially with everyone looking to change jobs.

I've also been wondering how many people actually take their pre reqs at their college of first choice. Some of my courses are from UConn and some are from MCC, but I've never even taken a class at Capital. I'm kind of worried because I didn't even meet anyone from the nursing department, and after watching the orientation video it seems like most people have a meeting with someone from the nursing department. I didn't have any questions about the application process, so I hope that isn't held against me.

Also, there was a lady who I talked to in my summer 2010 class, and she told me that she had a meeting with someone from the nursing department, and they told her that you're more likely to get into the nursing program if you take the pre reqs at the college of your first choice. She then encouraged me to take my fall 2010 classes at Capital (I didn't). Has anyone else ever been told this??? It doesn't sound right to me at all.

A few more weeks until we'll all know! I'm sitting on the edge of my seat, praying that I'm not on that dreaded wait list. Good luck everyone!

First of all, going to NVCC say does not improve your odds of getting in..Why?..because the computer selects where you go based on your school choices NOT the school. With that said, it obviously doesn't matter who you meet because they don't have a say if you get in or not, Hartford does. Stop listening to other people and inquire yourself, you'll be less stressed.

After speaking to a nursing counselor at Capital, I found out that there were 330 applicants that applied this year for 2011-2012 nursing program. There are 160 seat--so there's a 50% chance of getting in at CCC.

Is that 330 based on 1st choice or overall (2nd or 3rd choice)? There are about 750-850 that apply annually to the nursing program statewide. That would be interesting to see if/why almost half the applicants picked CCC.

Matt, I don't think half applied to CCC I think there are more and more applicants every year.
