Readmission into Nursing School Letter (Again)

Hello,

I've written a previous readmission letter, however I was denied readmission. I'm not quite sure of the reason, though my odds were not in my favor (I was 1/7 students reapplying). This is an updated letter I've created. Although I do need comments (good and BAD!), so I can edit it before May. If you do have comments, anything helps! Please and thank you for your help!

Dear Admissions Committee,

Unfortunately, I was dismissed from the Nursing Program on [Date] because I fell short of the grading standards. I am very disappointed about my performance in school, though I will remain accountable for my actions. Within the past few months, I have continuously reflected on my shortcomings and identified my weaknesses. I believe that if I am granted the opportunity for readmission, I will be successful in Fall quarter.

I have listed solutions to factors that contributed to my poor performance last quarter. In the beginning, I was unprepared for the intensity and expectations of the workload. I did not carry efficient study habits; I lacked the ability to answer NCLEX-style questions; I carried inadequate experiences regarding the nursing profession; and I divided my time between school and work. Consequently, these issues delayed my capability of succeeding in the class. After the third test, I realized my current state did not suffice. To resolve the problem, I attended multiple study sessions, improved my note-taking skills, practiced NCLEX-style questions, devoted more time in studying, completed reading assignments, and clarified content with my professors. Additionally, I resigned my position at [Job] on [Date] in order to avoid distractions and provide leisure. The changes in habits were productive and effective. I immediately saw changes in my test-taking skills and how I understood the content. It provided more time for clarification and exploring information. In addition, I achieve desirable test scores, which might have potentially surpassed my previous tests.

After my dismissal from the nursing program, I furthered my understanding of the nursing profession by completing a nursing assistant program. Involving myself in this occupation has enhanced my mindset and experiences. I have encountered situations that have made me into a more compassionate person. My dream of becoming a nurse has been enlightened due to these experiences, and I am ecstatically motivated in furthering my career in nursing.

If I am granted readmission to the school, I will enter with a greater understanding and hold a higher commitment to the nursing profession. I will also carry my methods from last quarter to the new quarter. And furthermore, I will never divert to the limitations I encountered in the past.

I respectfully ask for readmission into the XXX College Nursing Program. Please let me know if you need further information.

It looks pretty good, but I have a few suggestions.

You stated that after the third test, you improved your study skills. I would use data to back it up. For example, "I received a 73, 69, 74 on my first 3 tests. After the third test I made adjustments to my studying and achieved a 78 and 81 on the 4th and 5th test." You need to demonstrate that your changes did effect your grades.

You stated that you resigned from your first job to "avoid distractions", but later you stated that you are now working as a CNA. You need to explain why Job A was a distraction and Job B will not be.

Involving myself in this occupation has enhanced my mindset and experiences. I have encountered situations that have made me into a more compassionate person. My dream of becoming a nurse has been enlightened due to these experiences, and I am ecstatically motivated in furthering my career in nursing. While they might appreciate that you are more compassionate, it does not ensure academic performance. I would instead emphasize your increased nursing knowledge. For example, " This job has given me a better understanding of diseases and disease process, along with increasing my critical thinking skills by ..." What have you learned in your job (knowledge and skills) that you didn't understand in school?

You need to show them that you recognize what caused you to fail (list them), that you made an attempt to correct them in school (evidence) but the improvements were not enough to pass, have a job that increases your knowledge base (give examples), and a detailed plan of action if allowed to re-enter nursing school (ask questions in class, meet with instructors weekly and after tests, meet with a tutor X times per week, etc.)
