readings

How are other students picking and choosing what to read in the chapters. I am in Med-Surg and we use Smeltzer and Bare. I try to read all I can but i feel i would be better reading the "important" stuff but i am not sure what i should focus on. :cat:

I read everything! that's how I learn though so I read and read and read! I know when I first started I heard advice to read the boxes and extra stuff outside of the paragraphs but for me that was not enough information an expiation of "why". You can't just memorize you have to be able to know why and understand the concepts. So i read every chapter and everything in every chapter. Not everyone can do this, it depends on your learning style but it hasn't failed me yet! And after I read I do nclex questions from the book and nclex questions from an nclex CD. sylvestri is the one I use and it's helpful. I also study power points to hit the high notes after I have done all of the previous things. I hope this helps and you just need to find your method.

I'm not going to lie... I read everything because school is my full time job and I don't have any other responsibilities. But my instructors always say that if you don't have time to read the whole chapter then you should focus on knowing what would put a person at risk of having the disease (i.e smoking), what are the clinical manifestations of the disease, some info about medication, and especially what are the nursing interventions you should implement.

In my program you can skip reading the etiology/pathophysiology part and still get an A on a test because they don't make test questions about the disease process but how would you react to it and what is your job as a nurse.

Do they not give you specific pages/chapters to read? Our instructors give us objectives with the exact pages they want us to read in each book.

I read it all, usually three times, then make notes and read those a bajillion times.

I don't read any of it. I know I should, but my lectures and powerpoints cover everything on the tests. The only time I have opened a book this semester is when the powerpoint has a slide that is also a table in the book and I can't read it on the powerpoint because it's too small. I truly feel that I am learning and retaining the information.

I have not opened my book yet either. Everything on the tests come from the power points.

Specializes in Forensic Psych.

I try to resd everything but that rarely happens. We have a list of objective so I try to follow those and focus on reading related to the power points. If they spent 10 powerpoints on one subject, I should probably focus on it.

We were told by our Fundamentals Professor to read everything. So that's what I try to do. Plus go over her notes and nclex questions at the end of the chapter. I also do the question from the study guide and the app from the book. It's a lot but it gives me a good understanding when test time comes.

we get a list of learning outcomes and from those I read that specific area and make notes from the learning outcomes, our teacher told us to do selective reading :geek:

I just read everything because even though i might not be tested on it in class, i may be tested on it on ATI & Nclex. I learned a valuable lesson from 1 nursing exam some years ago about not reading everything & i made a 68 on that test so every since then i READ IT ALL! 10-20 pages aday is better than NO PAGES or ALL pages 2 days before exams! Im that id rather read it & know it & not be tested on it than NOT READ & KNOW IT & tested on it kinda chick!
