RE: Immunizations for nursing school

Published

I have a problem I don't know how to solve so I am brining it to THE PROFESSIONALS. I am finishing up my pre reqs now, and I start my core nursing program in Feb '08. We have to have proof of our immunizations, chickenpox, MMR, varicella, and so on and so on. Now, I don't have a personal copy of those immunizations. My mother, whom I care for in my home, has Alzheimer's and is not in the position to tell me where in her stuff it might be, I have looked. I went to school in a very small, there were 12 people in my class from kindergarten to 12th, rural school. I called them and if things are over 20 years old they throw them out. So, no records are there. My dilemma is obvious my solution, in my mind, is not. Is there some type of blood screening I can get done to verify those immunizations took place? If so, does a Doc need to send me for those labs or can I go on my own? Finally, if that cannot be done, is there enough time left, from now until Feb '08, to get those immunizations started or completed?

HELP HELP HELP. I don't want this to be a barrier!!!!!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ANSWERS IN ADVANCE.

You can go to your regular doctor and request a titre be done. It's a blood test that will show your immunity (or not) to those diseases. It's just as good as having your original records.

and if you need immunizations try the health dept. They may offer them free of charge.

when i needed proof of imm. my doc told me that the immunization was cheaper than the titre good luck

you can have titers drawn and they will probably make you get another dtp and i had to have a mmr. my mother had to sign saying i had chicken pox as a child. now you will more than likely need a hep b series. so if you get one now in sept, the next in october and the last in march they should be alright with that.

Have you checked public health in the county you grew up in? I wouldnt be surprised if you had them done there. Or have you called your old family doctor as a child? If these dont work you can have a titre drawn or just re-do them. Public health offers really affordable rates. Get on it soon, some vaccines are mulit-step that take months. As well your schools nursing program might know where cheap shots are available. Mine does this.
