Rationales to Questions not sticking

Published

Hello, everyone I just want say that while studying my NCLEX book I don't really understand the Rationales to why I missed the question.

It's really not sticking to me.

I'm doing my best to study everyday and still don't know why I can't understand this stuff to be able to either talk about it or at least understand and comprehend the Rationales to why I missed the question.

Plus, I go back in the book and try and study I'm a lil retarted or what?

This is very overwhelming I'm studying Chapters in order in Saunders NCLEX book for PN 3rd edition. Please,Please Please help me find away to understand this stuff.  :cry:. Just when I think I understand I don't know if I do or don't understand the information.

What I do is write down the things that I missed or don't understand at all especially those signs and symptoms of a disease and try to do a research on it and understand the pathophysiology behind those disease.. because of this, I was comfortable with the content that I am studying.. it helped a lot..

I do a lot of writing down too. I find if I write things down I understand it better and it seems to stick in my brain better than if I just read it. I've got a composition book just for NCLEX. I write down stuff I don't understand well, like acid-base balances. I also write down the percentage of each chapter I got right so I know if I need to go back and read and retake the test.

I agree about researching patho too. If I don't understand something at least fairly well, I'll drag out my text books and start researching. Every little bit helps and you never know what will be on the NCLEX.

hi vanessa williams! im having the same problems like you have.

Im almost halfway through saunders book. When i flip some pages on the first parts, which i have read before, it seems weird that i can't remember reading those items or even high lighting them! it's as if some person underlined some words for me. But when I start answering questions based on the earlier chapters, i am able to answer the questions correct. I'm able to stick some facts because while im reading a chapter, i thoroughly try to comprehend it, like getting very engaged in it, while reviewing i talk to myself trying to explain the disease process to a class (like a teacher). Other things i do so that some facts stick to my cranium is, get my senses involved in the review. While reviewing i have mozart or yanni playing in the background, sipping and smelling some hot green tea and i even go to extremes like going to the net and check what a disease look like. I then sometimes download these images and view them on my cellphone if i have the time.

Also, may i suggest that you make some flashcards but make sure that it contains only the vital information. So that when your caught in traffic you have something to read.

There are times that not even a single sentence makes sense to me, thats a signal that i should take a break! When my brain is saying "ok give me some break" i listen to it, i just get out of the room as soon as possible and try to walk around the park without thinking about reviewing, or NCLEX just walk and enjoy the sights and sounds around you (while doing this remember to take deep breaths, i've noticed that i don't breath enough while reviewing)

I'll be taking the nclex soon and i do hope that you and i will pass. Best of Luck!

Vanessa:

Don't know if this will help you but it has me so I'm gonna share. I, too, looked at studying for the NCLEX as a chore and a nightmare. One day, as I was reading, I realized I was enjoying what I was reading. I was learning something, didn't have a tight deadline like I did in school, and was actually liking the experience. If you can look at the Saunders book as something you truly wish to learn, you might find it less stressful. Try to forget that you are HAVING to learn it. Try to think "I really am interested in this stuff". You SHOULD be interested in it if you truly enjoy nursing. Also, instead of going in order of the chapters, I started in the back, where I found it more interesting. If I find a chapter that I really am uncomfortable with, I'll skip it and do an easier chapter. Once I have more confidence from getting answers correct, I'll go back to the chapter that scared me. lol

Don't know if this will help you but it did me. I also find a place to study that I feel comforable. It's very hot here but late in the day and early in the AM it's nice outside. I love being outside so I try to study as much outdoors as I can. The sound of nature is relaxing to me so it is less stressful to be outdoors.

vaness, try reviewing a pathophysiology book again, just a quick review. bcoz it will help u a lot on understanding a lot of med surg/priority questions. :wink2:

update: oops, som1 already told u bout' pathophysio , anyways, goodluck ^^

hey another thing vanessa.. I used those "post-it" and placed it on the walls of my room, it really helped me like especially those things that I couldn't remember in every chapter that i read...:D:up:

You are very welcome. When I stay inside I get "cabin fever". I love being outside but it is so blasted hot here that I either have to go out in the early AM or the late evening. Then I have to battle the dang mosquitoes. When I first moved to NC from S. FL, it was so nice here. We got several snows each winter and the summers rarely got over 90. The last couple of years, we've had next to nothing for snow and uppers 90s in the summer are common now. So if YOU can find a nice, comfy place outside, I am happy for you. Can you send a cool front and some rain to me? lol

vaness, if som1 havent told you of a good patho book yet, i suggest mosby's fifth ed. "biologic basis for disease in adults and children" by McCance and Huether. some of the context r kinda detail and sometimes hard to understand, but thats whats a patho book is, and it will help u improve ur comprehension. good luck
