Rant - Scientology and Anti-Meds

Published

Anyone else get caught up in this nonsense on the net or real life? Even people who are just anti-psych/med in general?? It drives me crazy.

On another forum people were discussing this TomKat (Tom Cruise) business and a couple mentioned the Scientology aspect. Well, I guess I can't avoid this issue, so I threw out a few comments about it. :chuckle Two people begin walking all over me about Tom's "religion" and what he and Katie Holmes do is their business. Fine by me, I was just pointing out the CoS issue. Then after a few exchanges they say "Scientology? I don't know anything about it" Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

She was claiming how it helped his dyslexia. Oh boy. Why do people argue about things they no nothing about?

Speaking of religion and psyche problems, I just read this BBC online article about an attempted exorcism of an Eastern Orthodox nun in Romania. She was actually schizophrenic, the article states, but the priest thought it was due to demon possesion.

No I don't suffer from mental illness, but I had a child who attempted suicide twice due to paxil and subsequently went through a horrible withdrawal process. If the meds work for you great, but the "take a pill to be happy" that is now the norm is VERY scary. Yes, true mental illness can be helped with medication. Trying to medicate away life normal stresses is not treating mental illness. The fact that doctors are prescribing antidepressants like candy is scary, and the fact that the patient isn't made aware of side effects and withdrawal from ssri's is VERY scary.

I am sorry for all you and your family have gone through. I have to say that the thought of a "happy pill" is a myth. Some people think that a pill will make miracles happen, weight loss, depression cleared, other psychiatric conditions poof all better. There is no quick cure for anything. I disagree though with saying that every patient is not made aware of side effects. Have you known anyone to ever read the entire drug insert that is given out with all medications? Is society aware that such an insert exists?

If you dont know what you are taking, EDUCATE yourself. I am not speaking at the original poster or saying this person did or did not research the med her child was on. I simply know that I am the only person I have ever heard of who reads those inserts. The information is readily available.

Please take my post with a grain of salt as I am a "medicated" person who takes effexor to help with my depression and anxiety. It is not a happy pill for me. It simply takes me from the pit of my mind to an even ground with most other people. It allows me to wake up and ask what will this day bring for me with an open mind. Instead of waking up and feeling as though my life was horrible. I have done much work on my self esteem, with and without counseling. There is no magic pill. I cannot stress that enough.

I truly do not mean to offend anyone, so I apologize if that erroneously happens. It is difficult to have a conversation via bulletin board posting. You cannot see ones expression, concern or mannerisms through typing that you would have with one on one contact. :uhoh21:

Tracy

Very well said Tracy. It's people like you who actually learn about what you put into your body and become educated enough to discuss them in this manner. It's obvious to me though, that taking an AD for depression/anxiety is much different in most people's eyes than taking one to prevent migraines. Many points I've made simply regarding the actions of neuro meds haven't even been addressed, so it's clear the stigma, as I mentioned, of mental health is alive and well. Very sad.

(Not directed at Tracy -->) As for the CoS, the information is out there, and I've seen enough to know it's trash. Not conjecture or opinion, but real documents and two former friends who had a run in with this "church". The evasiveness and counterattacks don't work, so I won't respond anymore.

Feel free to lock this thread. :)

I found the comments Tom Crusie made about Brooke Shields very distastefull, especially after watching her spell out her struggle on Oprah. I felt she was really brave to come foward with a story like that, i think she may help others by sharing it.

As for Mr. Cruise - I won't be watching any more of his movies or reading any more articles about him in the media.

Well,

Someone posing as a reporter squirted water on him at his London premiere.
