A Hillside nurse has been charged with scalding a 2-year-old Jersey City girl on Friday, leaving her in critical condition with third degree burns to her "lower extremities," officials said today.

The nurse, Ellen Ejimkonye, 30, made her first court appearance today on the charges of aggravated assault on Destiny Malak, endangering the welfare of the child and child abuse, the criminal complaint says....

...Destiny, who was born prematurely and requires the care of in-home nurses, is on a feeding tube and will need extreme grafting in order to minimize scarring from the burns that cover over 18 percent of her body, Gurgis said....

There is no one listed by the name Ellen Ejimkonye in the registry:

WAS THIS A HOME HEALTH AID? I think the paper should have verified whether it was a nurse and if so, what type. What do you think?

Next question...why is a CHHA taking care of a child with a GB?

I have seen reports that there were prior problems with the nurse. I wonder if this was her revenge for being reported? I just don't see how this could be anything other than deliberate. This nurse is a monster and I wish she would spend the rest of her life in the general population of the worst prison.

The license *********** is registered by Ellen O Ejimkonye of New Jersey. The license type is specified as Licensed Practical Nurse. The original issue date is listed as 2012-12-14. Based on the information obtained by ProLicenses from the state licensing board, this license's status is "expired" as of March 29, 2013.

That's odd as NJ licenses all expire on May 31..... Nor does the name readily show up on nj BoN (NJ BoN lists RN LPN and CHHA ) something off here

Could it be a temporary license that expired?

NJ doesn't do temporary licenses, and hasn't for over a decade.

Possibly a spelling issue of the name as I've seen at least 6 versions so far.

Thanks to all! It's been heartbreaking, and some of the blogs I read are so hurtful. I apologize for getting so crazy.,, you're right, I can't keep reading the blogs. Please accept my apologies and I beg you all to pray for baby Destiny

(((HUGS))) Of course I will pray for Destiny and her family. I also pray for her nurses, physicians, aides, PT, OT...everyone, that the Lord gives them abundant wisdom and tenderness as they care for her.

Horrible story! I hope the little one makes a swift recovery. Sooo terrible!!

First of all, the spelling on the name has been misconstrued by all of the papers. This nurse was a home practical nurse sent by a state funded agency. And, seriously, what is your motive in questioning whether she was a nurse or not? I think you are missing the point here. The bottom line is this this ellen Ejimkonye or whatever her name is is a sick person and got some sort of nursing certification and then tortured this innocent child. I hope she rots in jail!

The point is it's tiresome to have the bad actions of people who aren't nurses give actual nurses a black eye, all because the media doesn't do their homework.

How would you feel with someone in your town, with a similar name as yours, did something terrible, and in their haste the media named you instead of the person who actually did it?

This...said it better than I could have.

Add me to one who had taken care of a child with similar burns and the subsequent PTSD the child faced...my prayers are to this child and the family.

So did I; it was during my peds. rotation freshman year. I still see those chubby cheeks and beautiful blue eyes, with tears streaming down his face.

I didn't know NJ had home care agencies that were state funded.

Are they?

I think they mean the services were state funded (ie Medicaid as payor or catastrophic illness in children funded)

Where did you read about that?
