"It jsut water weight........"

Published

Why is it that when someone loses weight or a goodly amount in their first week they invariably say "it's just water weight.....".

Is there a fluid balance shift when someone restricts their calories? I always thought the weight loss was adipose.

Anyone know?

You just said it: "My body likes this weight". That's the key here. Your body is not the same as it was when you were 25, and you can't expect it to be. Midlife does that to us. Biology, in this case, IS destiny, for women tend to put on a few pounds around menopause no matter what we do to keep them away. It's not realistic to try to maintain the body of a young woman when we are no longer young. It doesn't mean giving up and eating everything in sight, or letting ourselves go completely to seed; it just means accepting our bodies as they are, and celebrating the fullness of our midlife selves. In every sense of the word.;)

Marla, I don't think there's a one size fits all kind of diet. You probably feel good because your blood glucoses are stable on a meat and salad diet Just a guess. I feel tremendously sluggish. But sometimes I confess my veggie diet does bloat me. I had a big plate of rice and beans for supper last night and looked like I was six month pregnant later in the evening (good thing I live alone these days...LOL). Usually, I'm not bothered by beans and brown rice, but it might have been the brussel sprouts, broccoli and spinach that I had with it. :)

I think to if you're not used to it the bloat is worse. I know when I went vegetarian the first time many years ago I blew up like a ballon, but eventually settled into as I got use to it. Perhaps just adding a bit of whole grain, legumes and vegetables and building up will help?

Tweety, a gallon of water weighs 2.2 pounds. Any 'water' you lose by restricting fluid intake is at best temporary, since most cannot restrict their fluid intake long term. The fifteen pounds you need to lose, can be lost be restricting the number of calories you eat. Or if you want, severely restricting the number of grams of carbohydrates you eat each day, like to 32 gms per day. Of course once you resume eating your normal intake of calories or carbohydrates, you will regain unless you increase your level of activity. Isn't life fun?:lol2:

Don't worry I am not one to restrict water intake just to lose water weight. My extra 15 pounds is pure fat. I'm not one to retain water.

I did the Atkins indusction of severe restriction of carbs and felt so poorly at the end I'm not doing it again.

Guess I'll just have to lower the amount of calories and exercise. There's no magic wand is there.

In regards to the first statement, people say that because they know they look hotter and thus want to try to act like it's "no big deal." At least that's what I did when I started losing weight. I acted like I was a sexy mama all along!

*it's soooo past my bed time*

I really hate it when people say "oh most of it is water!" I have just lost 24 lbs and am proud of the fact and I don't think it is all water! It has been a lot of hard work and exercise and I intend to keep going and bring this diabetes under control.

I think sometimes it is minimization. "You look good have you lost weight?"

"Yes, I've lost 15 pounds, but it's mostly water weight". Instead of patting ourselves on the back for doing well and saying thank you.

Congrats Night!!!!

Sorry to contradict, but a gallon of water weighs a bit over 8 pounds. I think you may be thinking of kilograms: 1 kilogram equals 2.20 pounds.

I am not a fan of Atkins and never have been. I think his diet is too dangerous for Type 2 diabetics, of which there are a number of his adherents that swear by him. There is just too great a risk in reducing one's carbohydrates that much for too many people. Cut your carbs or calories, increase your exercise and you will do just fine.

dh is right . . . .

1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liter

1 gallon of water equals 8.33 lbs.

I love breads and cereals, especially the hearty whole-grain varieties, but they're not worth all the abdominal distress and the enervation they bring on shortly after I consume them. Weird.

Are you gluten intolerant? I found out I was because I would get really sick after eating a lot of pasta or bread. And I thought I was doing good because I was eating a lot of whole wheat/grains.

Speaking of kids making comments......I'm not overweight, but my kids still make comments about my body. My son (4) likes to push the skin on my upper arms and say "jiggly...jiggly". I don't think my arms look too bad but my son thinks it is hilarious.

Thanks Steph, I had a rough range of howmany liters equaled one gallon, since I never really saved any money filling my gas tank in Canada.

I have researched the weight of water, here on the net, since I first posted. I have learned ranges from 7.1 lbs to 8.5 lbs per gallon. There isn't even an agreement on the net to the true weight of water.:lol2:

Yeah, and a gallon of gas weighs less than a gallon of water.

That is because a gallon of gas, in a closed container, frequently develops some of it's content into vapors. And we all know how much hot air weights:lol2:

Another reason for the water weight comments.

I work part time for Weight Watchers. In the first week, people usually lose a lot more than any other time. We do say that some of it is fluid. Why?

Well when we eat poorly, we tend to eat higher in sodium too. When we eat healthy foods, they also tend to be lower in Na AND we are also drinking more water. So our bodies feel like it's "ok" to release that extra fluid. But some of the initial weight loss is fat as well. This is usually just for the first week or two. HTH..
