A nurse from another unit suddenly became very ill last week. She is 62 and has worked on that unit full time for last 40 years. She was taken to our ER from her unit but was sick enough to be transfered to a big medical center. Last evening someone from my unit called her to check on her at the other hospital, she has a lot of friends. The unit she works on is in a shaky situation right now as far as censes. There is talk of shutting it down. The first words out of her mouth when they put her on the phone were, "Is my unit still open?" Godbless her. I wish that I had a job that I cared about that much. PS Good chance she will be ok, would not be surprised to see her back to work in a month or two.
I get the feeling this job is not only her livelyhood but her life. People that have something to live for tend to do well when recovering from serious illness.
Hope she gets well soon. When they close down units, is it temporary, or permanent. Our gyn unit closes sometimes due to low census but always reopens. Or is it talk of a permanent shut down.
Sometimes your "unit" is your second family. Our sister unit was closed and those nurses had a really hard time with their family's collapse. Fortunately we were able to absorb about 6 of them. There was a diaspora for the rest.
