just wondering if your facility does "huddles" in the beginning of every day? It consists of a "reflection" for the day, pretty much a unit meeting every day, complete with short term goals that everyone has to work on to achieve. there is an opportunity to express issues like lack of equipment, health concerns of fellow co workers, announcements for various things. It usually takes up 10-15 min q AM and then we have to give report. it has resulted in no one getting out on time anymore and then we get the talk about everyone needs to get out on time.

Day shift leads go to hospital wide "huddle" every morning. Our MCH group has huddle late afternoon to deal with night shift staffing in our areas (L&D, PP, Peds and NICU). We have a float team who travel in these areas, where the need is greatest.
By the time we have huddle early in the am, we have usually dealt with staffing issues for day shift, although changes do get made r/t sick calls. As much of our business comes through L&D, we get a report on laboring patients and antepartums.

I once heard the story of a guy who was a peon in a company that sold cabinets. The sales staff had long, frequent meetings about meeting goals, etc. to which he was not invited because of his status. One day, while everyone else was in a meeting he made the largest sale for the month. He continued to do that consistently and was finally invited to the sales meetings. Later he opened his own store and, feeling meetings were often counter-productive, decided that only the people who needed talking to would get the talk. Today we call his store(s) Home Depot.

When I worked in bedflow at another hospital, we had huddles every morning to ensure we were able to bed all the surgeries or figure out if we needed to lateral patients between ICU's or possibly cancel OR cases. Where I am now, we have administrative huddle every morning that consists of the hospital administrator, VP of nursing, VP of medical affairs, directors of the inpatient units, manager of pharmacy, chaplain, manager of care management, and director of facilities management (and sometimes some other people wander in). After this huddle the VP's make rounds on all the units in the hospital before beginning their other daily obligations.

The huddle takes less than 2 minutes.
Who is a DNR, reminder to renew restraints/audits will be done today, infection control issues and any expected admissions from OR during our shift.
Anything longer than that is a staff meeting and should be scheduled as such.
