Quit before probation...Am I entitled to get paid my accrued time?

Published

I am have pretty much decided to quit my job, I am shy of the probation period but supposedly have been accumulating time.

Does the company have to pay any vacation time accrued? Thanks for any info

You need to research your institution's policy on resignation. It should spell out the conditions under which you would be eligible to be paid your accrued PTO.

Generally speaking, most hospitals require that you give notice according to policy, and work your remaining days without calling off to be eligible for payment of PTO.

And at most places, even though you start accumulating from date of hire, employees are not eligible to USE or collect the accrued time until you are past your probation.

It also depends on if you are covered by a union contract. In MN the state supreme court recently ruled that vacation time did not have to be paid for resignation. (Unless the union contract required it. The contract in effect creates a property right to the vacation.)

Another argument for working in union hospitals.....

At my place you don't get to use your time till you're past probation. If you quit before probation is up, your time won't be paid out.

Depends on what the facility's policy says.

another reason NOT to have a union - people ought to be aware of the rules before they play

(I'm sorry, I'm not understanding what you mean -- why is this "NOT" a reason to have a union?)

At my place you accrued and could use and get paid for from day one if you wanted to. HOWEVER, if you left before 6 month probation you had to PAY IT BACK! That's one reason to think long and hard about at least sticking out probation time.

I have no idea what you mean either. Can you elaborate? Thanks
