As most of you know, I have been recommending initial licensure in NY for quite some time. And for those of you that did not heed the warning, you now know why.
New York is three easy applications only, next you take the NCLEX exam, then you get a hard license and can endorse to almost any state afterwards. Because of the requirements of the Special Credentials Verification for New York, you do not have to do any of the running around to obtain your documents. CGFNS will obtain them for you....after you sign the release and send them the money.
NY also requires two short classes that can be done on-line, one on Child Abuse, and the other on Infection. Both are available for about $15 each and take only one hour or so.
NY BON application can be found at http://www.op.nyed.gov. You only need to submit "Form 1."
The Special Credentials Verification can be found at http://www.CGFNS.org, as well as the Visa Screen Application.
Once you have received documentation from NY that your credentials have been received and approved, submit payment to Pearson-Vue for the NCLEX exam. http://www.perasonvue.com. They are the ones that will actually send you the ATT letter, upon approval of the Board of Nursing. Be aware that this ATT (authorization to test) is only good for ninety (90) days. You will have onlt that amount of time to get the exam done in, otherwise you will lose your payment and have to start again.
Hope that this helps................ :balloons:
Most importantly, NY will issue you the license without a Social Security Number.
If you are currently in a nursing program now, have you selected a specialty area as of yet? The big issue that you will have with currently doing training in the UK, is that most programs no longer meet the requirements and you will need to pick up the missing hours. It is easiest to do if you are doing Adult Med.
With the states that you selected, you will need to go thru CES or CVS for them, and get that certificate before any of those states will even look at your application. You will also need to get a Visa Screen Certificate. From the time that you graduate, provided that you have all hours required, you are probably looking at about 16 months or so, maybe a month or two earlier.
If you figure on average four to six months before you get the CES or CVS done and are able to sit for the exam, then the petitioning process begins. An employer cannot do a thing until you actually pass the NCLEX exam, as a copy of your passing needs to be provided for immigration right from the start. And then that process needs to be completed before you will get documents that will permit you to work.
if you have those, then you are okay. but ca is still going to take the longest to get approval to sit for the exam, if you trained overseas.sorry, but it is almost impossible for me to remember everyone. i can only relatively keep up with those that i speak to all of the time or frequently.
where are you actually planning to work? if ca, i would go the route of vermont for initial licensure, then just endorse.
hi suzanne, just out of curiosity, why do you recommend vt over ny if ca is the destination state? how fast it is as opposed to applying in ny? are requirements the same between the two states?
thanks in advance :)
Suzanne, thank you for all your time. We'll either go through CGFNS for this exam, or she will go work in retail or elsewhere - if the CGFNS exam will seem like too much and not worth the effort. You are right - we should have checked before starting this with NY. Anyway, you were real help. Thanks again. Ilia
It is a shame for her to go into retail with all that she has gone thru and especially with the salaries the way that they are now. I still suggest commuting, but not returning home for those two nights, stay near the hospital with a friend or even at the hospital. Some actuall yhave dorms for that. Even if she were to work in CT, by the time that you finish a twelve hour shift, you are too tired for much of anything else. I still vote for commuting.
Hello Suzane,
I am a Diploma nurse from india and worked as a RN in UK for 4 years.I came to US as depended(H4 visa).I would like to sit for NCLEX exam. Please correct me if i am doing wrong for the following.
1.I needs to apply local Board of nursing.
2.Apply for credential evaluation report from CTS
3.register with VUE for exam.
Heard that since I did diploma in Nursing(done in india), my psychiatric hours are less during our course,I may asked to complete specific hours before appreaing for exam and this extra step is not required in NC.Do you have any idea on this?.if yes, which are the states are excepted for this step?
My Husband's job is kind of travelling all the time, we stay in once place for less than three months. Can i apply for licence in NC eventhough I stays in IL.
Suzane,I really appreciate if you could spare some time to answer my queries.
Thanks alot

There are no states that are excepted. Youy will need to apply thru CGFNS and get an answer from them. It depends on your program specifically, most that I am aware of from there mee the psych requirements. If you are goign to work in Illinois, you will need a CES done by CGFNS.
The US govenrment is the one that sets these requirements, and you will also need to get a Visa Screen Certificate, so going thru NC is not doing you any favors.
I am posting this for a friend, Chew is Chinese citizen but finished his BSN degree in the Philippines, too late to know he can't be given a license in the Philippines since he is not a Filipino. Is there any other way he could get a greencard in US to practice nursing.
For what I know is that he only needs his full transcript of records and let the school forward it for him.
Thanks alot suzane for your prompt reply.if i decided to apply IL board of nursing.I guess they they need a approval from CES,right.Suppose if I planning sit for the TOFEL,then whether this score can used for both the VISA screen and Nclex exam?
Thanks in Advance

TOEFL score alone won't work, you need the entire series for the Visa Screen Certificate.

The US government does not require a license in the home country, or where the nurse attended nursing school, only a completed set of transcripts.

I have a follow up question, what about if he is to get a visa screen which is required when applying for an immigrant visa to US, from what I know, it requires one to be an RN since cgfns needs a verification from the PRC(the licensing body of the Philippines)right? So in his case, how could that be if he is not yet an RN since the PRC won't allow him to be an RN in the Philippines.

I am currently studying for my BSc in Nursing and I plan to move to the States as soon as I possibly can after I am qualified! What do you rekon the minimum amount of time is that I could get all done(visas, nclex ..err...etc.) and be good to go? I suppose it varies from state to state and I havent really looked at many specific areas but I would be looking at florida, new york or hawaii (somewhere that could make me feel like I'm on holiday as soon as I finish work!)
hope you can direct me in some way, you seem to be the most knowledgable on these things. Thanks
p.s Im from the u.k
