As most of you know, I have been recommending initial licensure in NY for quite some time. And for those of you that did not heed the warning, you now know why.
New York is three easy applications only, next you take the NCLEX exam, then you get a hard license and can endorse to almost any state afterwards. Because of the requirements of the Special Credentials Verification for New York, you do not have to do any of the running around to obtain your documents. CGFNS will obtain them for you....after you sign the release and send them the money.
NY also requires two short classes that can be done on-line, one on Child Abuse, and the other on Infection. Both are available for about $15 each and take only one hour or so.
NY BON application can be found at http://www.op.nyed.gov. You only need to submit "Form 1."
The Special Credentials Verification can be found at http://www.CGFNS.org, as well as the Visa Screen Application.
Once you have received documentation from NY that your credentials have been received and approved, submit payment to Pearson-Vue for the NCLEX exam. http://www.perasonvue.com. They are the ones that will actually send you the ATT letter, upon approval of the Board of Nursing. Be aware that this ATT (authorization to test) is only good for ninety (90) days. You will have onlt that amount of time to get the exam done in, otherwise you will lose your payment and have to start again.
Hope that this helps................ :balloons:
Most importantly, NY will issue you the license without a Social Security Number.
HiI I'm sorry I just went directly towards opening up my problem without introducing myself. Suzzane, i'm a Filipina nurse working here in England. I've earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING in the Philippines on March 1996. I was practising my nursing profession as a staff nurse in one of the private hospitals there and had also work as a school nurse before i came here in UK.

Hi, Suzanne! I just passed the Dec 05 local boards here in Manila. And I'm planning to take the NY NCLEX. My problem is I can't decide whether to take it in HongKong or New York (since I have a US Tourist Visa). My colleagues are telling me it that if I take it in the US, I might not be able to come back in Manila immediately until I get a permanent residency. My husband and 3 kids are in Manila. While my parents and siblings are in the US. What can you suggest I do? Thanks!

You will not receive a green card just by getting a NY license. You have to have an employer that will petition for you.
NY usually only takes a couple of weeks for you to receive the permission to sit for the NCLEX, that is not the ATT. That is actually supplied by Pearson-Vue once you submit payment and they have received the authorization from NY as well.
If you are a UK citizen, they you would have a visa waiver for the US. This type of entry cannot qualify for the Adjustment of Staus, as in fact you do not have a visa. Plus with the Visa Waiver, you only get 90 days and you need at least 180 days to be able to get things done.
Please read the stickies at the top of the page to get the rest of your questions answered.

My suggestion is to go the route of Hong Kong. And do things legally, especially since you have a family that is there, and I am sure that you would want to include with you getting a green card.
Just because you take the exam in the US, it doesn't automatically give you a job and an Adjustment of Status, etc. And technically, it is against immigration of the US to come to the US on a tourist visa for the purpose of finding a job and staying.
Hi Suzzane,Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.:icon_lol: I'm glad i have this opportunity to open up my longing to be able to become a Licensed Nurse in the US. I know you could help me if you would please. I'm working as a Registered Nurse in a Nursing Home here in England and i just don't know where and how to start with my application for any US Nursing Exam. Is it possible for me to take the NCLEX without taking the CGFNS? I also don't have any idea of any review center as I'm working just in a town which is a 4-hour travel in going to London. I know i badly need to take review classes before i'll take the exam as it has been years and years since i graduated from college. Another thing also that had hinder me from my application is that i'm working almost every night that if possible i just have to go on a review thru the computer. I would be very happy to receive your reply soon. :Santa5:
Kind regards,
Vivian
You should be fine with the exam if you follow what I have posted on the NCLEX Discussion Forum.
You can do the review on your own, at your own schedule.
hi suzanne! this forum is really great! i always visit and enjoy this site, but i am not a nurse. the questions i have for you though is about my husband's case. let me tell you first the situation. i am a lawful permanent resident of u.s.a. living in Florida, and in the process of petitioning my husband. my husband is in the philippines, a nursing student. i am hoping sooner that he'll be qualified for a V-VISA. Have you heard of this kind of visa ? this visa is a new nonimmigrant visa category which enable the spouse and children of lawful permanent resident of the U.S. to live in the U.S. while awaiting for their "priority date" to become current. V-visa holders can also apply to the INS for employment authorization. Now, here are my questions:
1. if he would be able to get here with that kind of visa, would you also recommend him to get licensed first in New York instead of doing it directly here in florida?
2. from what i understand here in this thread, my husband does not need to be licensed in the Philippines, and does not need the CGFNS exam, but needs the Credentials Evaluation. I believe too that he doesn't need the Visa Screen. Am i right with all of these?
3. How about the English test? does he need this? coz from what i understant english test is part of the visa screen. so this is related to queston #2.
thank you so much. i know this will greatly help my husband for planning ahead of time.
Essentially what you are doing is applying for a spousal green card, I would just go that route. Not sure what the differences are betwen that and the K series. If it is too new, you may run into issues with that and only come up with delays. Best bet is to actually contact an immigration attorney to find out what will work best for you.
If you are going the K route, then he will not need the Visa Screen Certificate, nor the English exams for immigration.
Fro #2, you are correct. Since he will be getting a SSN#, he can just go for the licensing in Florida, as well.
