Now that sounds like a homework question...

Sure does.

To the OP: AN membership does not do students' homework for them. Perhaps if you shared your research with us, we might be able to point you in the right direction, but your posting history doesn't show much initiative on your part.

Florence Nightingale probably did her own homework, which I think is fantastic.

as much as pascal or babbage did for computers. it does not. why should it? i think that she made some great contributions but at the same time, so what? nursing existed before her and would have had to have changed with the times, medicine grew and expanded so why wouldn't nursing.

nursing is guilty of a kind of cult of personality around nightingale. no other profession i have seen has such a strong form of ancestor worship. it is time to grow up and move into the 21st century.

i think she was partly the reason that nursing has been so hierarchical and rigid in its traditions. this reseach paper shows she was also biased against men: (would we be so ready to venerate a man who displayed such feelings towards women?)

My view may upset some of the traditionalists but truth is truth.

I don't know crap about FN, so her life has no impact on mine. I know she was a nurse, and she had something to do with handwashing. That's about it. Do your own homework.

Sounds like you are trying to get us to do your homework......I learned about her in level 1...and so should you have.

Hi everyone flame me if you want but I have to say it.

You know most of the nurses on here were rather rude to the student who asked the question and there was an assumption made. The question was not Who is Florence Nightingale and what did she do? That would suggest the student wanted everyone to do his/her homework like what was implied. The question was if Florence Nightingale influenced anyone personally or profesionally? That would take asking nurses that question not another student or googling that.

The other assumption that was made was it is only learned about in nursing school. Florence Nightingale and her story is 2nd grade Social Studies in many states. It is repeated every single grade after that. Until one has to hear the same thing all over again in nursing school day 1. She is about as ingrained in the subconcious as Mickey Mouse but without a cute song.

Usually that type of question the poster asked is NOT in the textbook. They don't have a who influenced who section in a 1st quarter nursing textbook.

What is in the textbooks are the archetypes Florence, (The Angel of Mercy) The Handmaiden, and the Sexy Image/Prostitute and Nurse Ratchett.

So much for communication which is supposed to a nursing pillar.

Like I said flame me but there was a lot of assumptions made regarding that single question, and stop assuming that all nursing student are dumb about an archetype that even kids know about.

It is also an assumption that an answer would be and can be plagarized and added to a paper as part of someone's homework. With True Scan and stuff like that it would be within a week or two into instructors grading that students assignment. It literally scans just about anything that relates to the topic and matches them to every online paper, forum, message board etc. They're catching students athe pre req level and nursing students are checked even more rigoursly.

Didn't she invent TED hose?

just kidding.

:yeahthat: :yeah: :roll

Cracked me up! Thank you for the laugh. I also do not feel the life of Florence Nightingale has influenced me personally or professionally. Like many other posters I really don't know much about her, nor do i care to investigate. I have enough homework of my own to do. The RNs I have worked with and work with are the ones I feel influence me.

Really? I don't remember learing about her. (Other than nursing school)

My professors briefly mentioned her name, along with a few others who were instrumental in the growing field of nursing. I actually have her 'book' that she wrote, but only because someone I used to work with gave it to me to read as a gift when I got my acceptance letter.

If the original poster was just curious, I don't think she's (FN) been all that influential in my personal choice of nursing. I think her observations/contributions have been important to the field, and while she is an important brick in the foundation of nursing overall, I think she's just one of many who have made an impact.
