What is the rational behind adminstering medications to your patients on empty stomach, with food, two hours later, one hour before etc?
You would administer meds to your patient with meals to reduce the level of discomfort in GI system. 2 hours later (also to reduce GI discomfort) for some diseases. Empty stomach to increase the rate of absorption for the medications. What are other rationals? Please help.
1) Why would you give medications with meals?
2) Why are some medications best taken before meals?
3) Why are some drugs best taken after meals?
4) Why are some drugs best taken on empty stomach?
5) Drugs needed to take in the morning why?
- So, that you don't have to wake up at night to pee.
???????????
Someone please reply. Really appreciate it. Thank you again.
and another question also:
what does radical mean in medical language? for example in: radical mastectomy or radical neck etc.
thank you again.

1. Meds w/ meals- To decrease GI irritation ex- aspirin
2.Before meals- To increase drug absorption
3.After meals- Some drugs work better in a more acidic environment, after you eat your stomach is more full with its acids- im guessing- prob right though.
4.Empty stomach- Increase drug absorption
5.Morning drugs- Not sure of the reason but- some drugs take longer to work and their peak effects may be needed in the middle of the day when someone is most active ex- corticosteroids
6. Radical means complete, a complete mastectomy- their taking out everything.

Some meds need to be taken on empty stomach because the molecules from the med could combine with certain foods and render it useless because it's been inactivated. Also, to avoid potentially toxic interactions.

Additionally, some drugs need to be spaced out from other meds a certain amount of time. I can't remember which ones I've seen lately, I know there was one I gave a few weeks ago that had to be one hour before or two hours after any other oral meds. With the amount of meds that poor patient was taking, that was kind of a challenge! *grin*
Also, certain transplant drugs have to be taken at certain times.
thank you all

Antihypertensives are usually given in the morning (although there are some that are given twice a day), because blood pressure usually drops while sleeping and diuretics are usually taken in the morning to prevent the loss of sleep by getting up to go to the bathroom.
