Question Regarding Degrees

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Thanks so much for everyones replies to my earlier email. I have checked out what my local university has to offer and compared to what others have to do it seems mine is totally different?

From What I understood in most cases you either go for the two year degree (ASN) or the four year (BSN)

Well in the program we have, you do your pre-reqs and then get accepted for the ASN program, when you graduate from the ASN program you take the NCLEX, and if you don't pass this then you cannot continue on to get the BSN. Is the normal? Does these mean I'm going to have to take 6 years to get a BSN? I'm really confused.

Specializes in Operating Room.

After graduating with an ASN (or ADN), you take the NCLEX, every 45 days if need be until you pass it. I think you have 4 years to pass it w/o taking more classes. I may be wrong on the # of years.

After you pass the NCLEX, you can then go for the BSN by way of a RN-BSN.

If you take classes for the ASN, in most cases you need to persue your RN-BSN w/i 5 years. That way you don't have to retake any science courses.

If you don't pass the NCLEX, you can't do the RN-BSN because you are not an RN until you pass it. (That's when you keep retaking the NCLEX until you do pass it.)

Hope this helps.

So once you Take the NCLEX after getting your ASN then you dont have to take the NCLEX again? or do you after the BSN?

thanks

Once you pass the NCLEX, you do not have to take it again. It doesn't matter if you've completed your ASN or the BSN in order to take it. Either one will prepare you to take it. Then after you've passed the NCLEX, you are a RN!
