Question about an order

Published

I am a first semester nursing student, went to pick up my assignment today and one of the orders under meds says.

"Sodium Chloride 0.9% IV soln

500 ML (dose) IV (route) FLSTK (Frequency)"

I need to know what FLSTK means...I may be having a brain fart..but cant remember lol

Specializes in Neuroscience/Brain and Stroke.

It means it's a stock drug, the floor keeps it in the PYXIS, no need to order from the pharmacy.

Specializes in Trauma, Teaching.

What you are missing in that order is a rate or frequency. Are these boluses for low BPs, a one time dose, what?

Hey ForTheLove! good pickup, that floor stock abbr. is not one I've seen before.

Specializes in ICU.

Haha thanks, for the love- I never knew that's what the "STK" stands for when we override for meds from the Pyxis! Lightbulb!

Specializes in Progressive, Intermediate Care, and Stepdown.

Did you ask your clinical instructor or other nurses? Sometimes nurses are familiar with doctor's handwriting and abbreviations. It's worth a shot. No pun intended. :p

I am of the belief that abbreviations should not be used in healthcare....

I often wonder how many die each year because of them....
