Question on hiring status

I resigned within 90 day probationary period for inability to continue working due to back injury. Manager totally supportive and understanding with my decision. There were issues my last shift worked which were discussed and resolved. I had to leave in the middle of my last shift because my back pain had gotten to about an 8 and I became incapable of caring for my patients adequately. Manager told me in our last meeting that I was eligible for rehire and that I could put them down for a reference. I am possibly wanting to go to work in this hospital system again. I called HR to inquire of my hiring status. I was told that termination date was May 23 and "final". There is no other information. My question is what does "final" mean? I know the terminology "termination" means that employment was voluntary or involuntary separation. This is really bugging me. I am afraid of contacting the manager about this. The HR person didn't know what it meant.

It's hard to know what terms different hospitals use. I'd call the manager. Also, something I ended up doing, partly to save time, and give prospective employers more info that "eligible for rehire" and salary (about all they can give without possible legal repercussions), was to ask for a written letter of reference from managers and/or supervisors. I ended up with a stack of letters that I copied with my resume. :)

I am confused as to why you are afraid to contact the manager about this? If she was supportive and said you would be eligible for rehire why not just call and clarify.

Print that puppy out and put it in a safe place. Also, ask for a letter. Sometimes they say they will be a reference for you and then, are not. This just happened to a friend of mine. People do lie, don't trust.

I am unsure as to what "final" means. What I don't understand is how HR can also be unaware of what it means. Don't they input the status themselves? If anything I would think your manager would not know what it meant and direct you to HR to find out.

I would definitely call up your old manager and ask for a formal letter of recommendation as above posters have said.

Is there anyone else you can talk to in HR? Also, call your previous manager and talk to her. Never hurts to network and touch base with former contacts.

I wonder if final means the person is completely terminated, whether vol or involuntary, vs a person in a layoff or leave of absence status.
