Question about diabetic

If a student has been running high blood sugars and does not finish their meals all of the time (so it's never exactly known if to dose for the full meal or not) do you dose right before the meal to counteract high sugars and correct low if needed or after the meal to see what they have eaten and if still high later on take it from there (what I do)? Hope this makes sense.

Dose before and try to control the low. Basically, follow the care plan. Also, speak with the parents and the physician about a possible dose adjustment and the situation. Is there a reason the child doesn't finish the meal (i.e. young age, picky eater, etc.)

Young/picky just because of age. Plan is to carb count and dose for lunch. So I figured I should count carbs actually eaten instead of full meal because it can differ by a lot.

If the child is old enough, try sitting down before hand with the child, menu in hand. Often they will know what they will want to eat (although this early in the year, they may not know if they like certain items) and you can figure the carbs/calculate the dose. The schools in my district offer choices between entrees and side items and even with a picky eater, I can usually get an idea of what they are going to eat (I hate fish! I don't like brown rice!)

It's a lot of extra work for me but worth it, to go with the 2 in my school. We pick out the meal together and I check their trays after they finish. We are carb counting for a kindergarden and 3rd grader. It's two trips across the building but worth it to me to know I am getting the right carb count and giving coverage.

Is it possible to coordinate with the parent to bring a lunch from home with foods they will likely eat? And/or food with high amounts of carbs to supplement.

Not for my diabetics, I'm lucky to get a parent to answer their phone. Packing a lunch for the little dears just might cause them to have to ADULT!

A shot in the reality arm like this is so welcome on this site. I believe the smoke has now momentarily cleared from my netherlands.

Keep up the reality check!!!!
