Puny job situation

Oftentimes, people are very skeptical when I tell them there is a huge nursing surplus where I live. They tell me I could get a local job if I really wanted to- they think it's just me.

I live in a town of 200,000 with no major metro areas nearby. However, there are three colleges with nursing programs- hundreds of new grads every semester.

In any field at any time, there are more openings than are advertised that get filled before there's any need to advertise. You could call all nurse friends and employers of nurses in your area, ask "Got anything coming up in the next couple months?" and maybe snag something decent before it gets advertised. If you wanted.

I don't even know any nurses in this area anymore. Due to being unable to find jobs, every single local nurse I know has become a traveler or moved away.

I've been looking for a job here for years.

Even the doc's offices don't have MAs- they all have under-paid BSN RNs- there are so many available here.

A lot of places have so many apps from RNs, they won't even accept apps anymore.

I was offered a case mgmt and home care visits job last year- $16. an hour, no pay for hours worked over 40 (basically, a salary job) no benefits, 25 cents/mile, no pay for on call- 100 hours a month of on call required.

If you're where I think you are, the hospital has lots of nursing jobs open that aren't necessarily advertised. So does the other big hospital in the immediate area.

There are also several small community hospitals within driving distance.

I have worked at one of the local hospitals in the past. Poor working conditions, miserable staff. I was unhappy there and quit. I've applied at the other one numerous times, and called them repeatedly, but I never get any interest.

I do have an offer pending at a facility here. Bad hours, and not an area of nursing I want to work in anymore, and more than 50% pay cut from what I make as a traveler.

But, if the offer goes through- I'm taking it.

I don't think this remark was helpful. I would prefer to move to Montana after I graduate but my wife's career is in MN. It is not always practical to relocate.

I have to agree, this is our home, we grew up here, raised our family here and all of our family is still here, I couldn't imagine moving. I feel I have to put my family before my career.
