Most RN's first borns?
I'm a first child born to womanizer-workaholic father and foodaholic mother with undiagnosed psych grandmother (moms mom) was deprssive that tried to commit suicide (thankfuly she didn't succeed) greatgrandmother was scizophrneic. On the other hand my fathers father was womanizer-alcoholic died @ 41 of heart attack and all of my moms family are addicted to rx drugs great uncle drug abuser died of cirrhosis...I'm older by 14 and 16 years than my little sisters always was moms best friend we always joke that i was her mother in our last lives.. Goes deeper my 1st husband was an alcoholic/workaholic/womanizer.. current bf alcoholic undiagnosed..It's almost like we nurses unknowingly no generalizations tend to be codependent the need to be needed and fix the unfixable at times...very interesting.i don't drink and am a go getter. they had some study on good morning america some study about the power of birth order maybe that combo of 1st born and dysfunctional family pulls us to this field i guess that's why sometimes we nurse have difficulty dealing with drug seeking or alcoholic Pt's something about looking in the mirror not being able to cope with the image looking back... always felt bad for ex grew up having to get mom from the local bar when he was nine large string of different stepdads that would beat his mom very sad..current bf dad and bro have dui's and are self admitted alcoholics

Travel Nrsg Pros/cons
as a brand new RN most travel agencies require atleast 10 mths experience regardless of exp( i.e. respiratory tech, emt, lpn) because you won't have much of an orientation you need some experience trust me i know i was an lpn for 4 years but they don't take new grad RN's 10mths to a year seems to be what i've heard. They want seasoned nurses that are able to adapt so off i go to the hospital to get that "experience" they so require.. Good Luck

My future in nursing looks bleak, advice?
ofcourse don't think of leaving something you love there's you should look into urgent care, case management (i currently am one), legal nursing... as for the bedside i'm not quite sure how bad your back is but try to stay away from the med surg, er, ortho, ltc and geriatrics.. but you could do pediatrics, labor and delivery, nicu.. i hope this helps plenty of nurses have bad backs they either have desk jobs or work with patients that they can handle best of luck.. some of my oworkers have adapted by wearing back supports the right shoes working 8 hour shifts.. Don't give up hope you know what you can handle you just have to be verycarful and i hope your following up with your PMD..

Re-orientation?
You are right trust your instinct you have been gone longer than you worked as an RN if you feel you need to orient then you need to orient..Don't do anything that will risk your license.. You were honest about your time away let them deal with it and if they have a problem just goes to show you they are more interested in having you out there than having you practice safely and comfortably and that is somewhere that may not be where you want to work.. Good Luck and at therisk of sounding cliche everything happens for a reason.

It's sometimes hard being a nurse of color isn't it?
Dear motorcycle mama You're comment made me sad because you are beautiful. No matter what our profession requires ALOT of love and kindness and that causes inner beauty and that shows in most of our faces please don't let anyone make you feel different please grant yourself some of the love and kindness you give to others... This topic hits very close i am of cuban parents born in miami,fl ... I'm blonde haired and green eyed which in some peoples eyes is a contradiction i have had co-workers innocently say that i couldn't possibly be hispanic and that i look to "white" this comment has been made to me by black/white/hispanic co-workers it makes me sad sometimes because i know that i'm not really considered white by my white coworkers but too white and americanized for my hispanic coworkers... go figure!.. Add into the mix that i'm a 25 i hit racism and ageism.. I use to let it bother me but i'm coming to terms with it i feel bad for them not me.. At the end of the day i don't care what people think I'm me love it or leave it i've realized that we are all individuals i'm proud to be an american, a person, and a nurse at the end of the day i win respect by my kindness and resolve after all it's hard to dislike someone that treat you with kindness, respect, and a smile.. As a hispanic i have often overheard (from coworkers that don't know i'm hispanic) "that they wish all these immigrants would go home" "That we're all lazy stupid mexicans or puerto ricans" It makes me even sadder when it comes from my black coworkers being of a minority themselves..I've even seen racism amongst the jamaican, haitian, and african american nurses.. It's sad that we are this way and i hope one day human nature will change my heart hurts for both the racists and their victims there is so much we can learn from one another if we let go of the hate and the prejudice.

I must be getting old: A rant
I agree with dimples i'm 25 and often shocked i don't know when we decided that scrubs should be sexy i know a director whose name shall remain nameless who constantly wears white extra tight cotton shirts and white pants that look as though they have been painted on with constant camel toe.. It looks inapropriate other dept's as well as patients discuss it now other nurses at my hospital figure if she can so can they

Bsn Mandatory!!!!!!!!
I've Been Hearing That They Are Trying To Make Bsn Entry Level Into Nursing.. That They Would Give All Existing Registered Nurses 5-10 Tyears To Get Their Bsn Like New York Is Making It Impossible For Asn To Find Work... If This Is True Any Ideas Which Is Best Rn-bsn Programs? And Details Which Can I Go Straight Into With My Rn.. I Live In Miami Willing To Travel On-line Not An Option

How opposite are you and your mate?
lolol.. I think all nurses are attracted to the bad boy with agood heart that just need a little tlc plus you kind of have to be up for anything with a woman that carries syringes in her pocket and and has seen more private parts than howard stern.. My boyfriend still gets mad at me when i explain that he imports and exports computers... (the correct explanation is that he works for one of the biggest manufacturers of electronics and handles the carribean and south american territory) sometimes i feel like i don't understand what anyone else does but yup he's quite and borders on OCD opposites attract and by nature we need someone we can nurture by the way did i mention he's a hypochondriac

new nurse confusion?????????
i am a new grad recently graduated in july and it is september i got my license..... here's the problem i was an lpn for 4 years two of which were in an emergency room. i'm intrerested in going back to the er but find that i am going on some of the strangest interviews on earth... maybe i'm not answering question correctly or as some (my mom and best friend) suggest i'm not being humble enough.. it makes me sad there is this big shortage and these hospitals will not even give me a chance.. is there really a shortage? i know i'm a new grad but plenty of new grads get hired in the er in south florida i've even heard of some getting hired into trauma.. please help! i'm not willing to go to an med surg floor. it seems like hospitals have the worst hr dept's on earth

MDC and South Florida nursing students
Dear Tamara, I'm a recent grad from mdc so i can pretty much tell you that you are competing with GPA's upwards of 3.7 and up in the generic program. i do have some good news for you i was an lpn and did the transitional program got in with a gpa of 3.35 it is not so competitive since you are a surgical tech you may be eligile for that program. go to medical campus for advisement... But most of all good luck hope this helps you..
