Anyone out there have info on the school in Arecibo, PR? It is a 24 month program that begins in August.

I'd love to hear anything, thanks.

Dafina I was also planning a trip. They have one week off around that time called semana santa

A good neighborhood to live in if you don't have a car is Las Cumbres because you can walk to school. Also there are student houses that have rooms for rent near the VA hospital and Centro Medico. The nice thing about that area is that you are near the train station. There is a shuttle from the train to the school. As for clinicals, you can usually find someone in your class who will give you a ride if you chip in for gas. I know several people who have been able to make it without a car. It is a lot nicer to have one though.;) Good luck to you all. PM me if you have any questions, i'm happy to help.

...And the best thing is when I hear some of the idiots saying they are going to go into a nurse anesthetist program. LMAO!!!! Ha ha ha. How about making it out of Pharmacology first.HMMM????? Slowly but surely this program is going to weed people out who should not be here.

I am catching up and I guess I didn't subscribe to this thread.

Yeah our class has at least 50% of the students saying they want to be a nurse anesthetist. What is up with that? They are only saying it because of the money and I don't think they really know what nursing is. Half those people will not make it through the program and another half wont pass the NCLEX.

After this trimester we are going to weed out a lot of people in Adult Care I. The highest grade on the first Med-Surge exam was 84% and the professor does not curve.

so are students allowed to work while in school if the financing is not enough to cover all expenses? are menial jobs hard to find there?

Yes of course you can work and there is plenty of time for it. However keep in mind that although you don't need Spanish at all to get by in day to day life you would need to be fluent to work unless you get work trade at school. Work trade is definitely possible but it would not be for very many hours.

Outside of school it is hard to find a job. We have a student in our class that was actively looking and finally landed a job after 4 months and he is perfectly bi-lingual. The unemployment here is currently 16% and is higher than any state.

Also the pay is down right awful here. It is almost not worth it.

Heyy PuertoRicoLocal I will be moving to PR in June 2011 to go to Inter's nursing program at the metro campus. Would you be able to tell me the best towns to live in that are close to the campus. Im not sure if I will be bringing my car to PR but could you also suggest where to get a car or even a motorcycle in PR. I lived in PR for four months so I am pretty familiar with the San Juan and Rio Piedras areas. My only concern is that I will need a car when it is time to go to clinicals.

Thankx

Don't worry about getting to clinicals. Those of us that have cars drive other students that don't have cars. You can always get a ride from someone. If you live in one of the 4 Las Cumbres communities you would not need a car. You could walk to school. There are a ton of students that live here and more than half don't have a car. I live in Las Cumbres and I have a car because I want to be mobile. But Starbucks is right next to campus so if you get sick of studying in the library you can walk to Starbucks or back home. I am less than 1/2 a mile from school.

I would not bring a car from home. They will charge you a fortune in taxes because this is an island. Cars new and used are more expensive on the island because of the import taxes. I know people that bought junkers and have spent a lot of money getting them fixed. I bought a 2008 and it is under warranty for 2 more years but I have not had a single problem with it. Yes it cost a pretty penny but I'll sell it when I leave and maybe loose a few thousand. It was worth it to me not to have a car in the shop all the time. And I don't trust the people running the shops anyway. More horror stories there.

Hey Dafina! For some reason I'm not getting notifications from this site anymore--not sure why. So, sorry I didn't get to you sooner!

Here is a link to our school calendar with all of the holidays and the Easter break. It's in English too.

And Dafina, I sent you a PM because I didn't have one from you in my inbox for some reason. I hope you get it! Let me know :)

Designer-Mommy, I sent you a PM...hope you don't mind and I apologize for not making a formal introduction. I'm applying to Interamericana's August 2011 session and I'm planning to make a visit to the campus in March or April to make sure that they have everything that they need from me. Can anyone tell me if the school has a break during March or April? I usually visit San Juan in the summer when school isn't in session and I don't want to make that mistake this time. I also haven't been able to talk with anyone in the nursing department this time, can anyone recommend a contact or "E" to help facilitate the application process? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I am still catching up and I apologize if I am reposting answers that people have answered. I am going post by post.

Dafina, Designer-Mommy should be able to get you in touch with "E." I don't have messaging availability yet and the system does not allow me to respond to people who have sent me messages. So I apologize to those of you who sent messages and I don't have enough posts to respond yet.

Dafina and Jen_Jen88 I believe they start the orientations in May if you want to wait until then to come down. If you are here you can get a lot done. You can get accepted and registered for classes all at once. It really is a heck of a lot easier to just do it all in person. I swear if you try to get accepted over the phone, through email, and snail mail you might end up strangling someone. It is extremely aggravating as you may have read from all the previous posters in our class.

Feel free to ask questions here and I made sure my notifications are going through now.

WorldTraveling & Designer-Mommy I sent you each an email

Sorry again Designer-Mommy,

When I said PM I really should have said email; I emailed you at the address I saw listed for you. I'm not so good with the "interweb" language, LOL. Thank you for the calendar, I reserved my usual spot in Santurce from April 13 to April 20 so I will visit the campus on the 13th or 14th to make sure they have everything from me.

Thank you as well Jen_Jen88 and WorldTravelingYogi! My friends that live in San Juan referred me to a site, clasificadosonline.com, are the rental and car listings legit or should I believe them as much as I believe craigslist? I was planning to do my final move on July 1; if orientation is in May, do you think they would do a second one like they did before classes last August?

Again, thank you so much for the information you guys.

and now the 64,000 dollar question!! are grads from inter american getting jobs in the states??

Dafina they will probably have one at the end of May, end of June, and end of July. However you can register without going to orientation and it is not like they give you any ground breaking info. It was a nice little orientation but in the end it was basically about registering which you can do anytime.

Dafina we should meet up on campus when you are here. Keep us updated. Designer-Mommy and I are in different classes. I am in the accelerated and she is in the normal program. For both programs the classes are at night so maybe we can meet you late afternoon and give you a tour.
