Psych no salary/pay

Specialties NP

Published

Hello fellow Pysch NPs,

I had an interview for out patient Psych job. They ask me if I am looking for contract hire or to be employed by them. I'm in The Pacific Northwest region Oregon/Idaho border rural area.

Not sure what is fair pay as this would be first full time psych job. What do y'all psych nps get per hour or salary. No weekends or holidays. No hospital rounds or on call.

I do work part time elsewhere and get paid $130 an hour. I am 1099 there I believe this is the higher end of the spectrum and do not expect the full time job to make such offer with benefits but not sure what would be a reasonable hourly or salary range.

I appreciate your feedback.

Thanks

Can you PM me?

Ok didn't know that. I havent accepted anything yet. That's why I am here! Ok so I should let them know is a low ball!! Lol. And it's not even tuition reimbursement is loan repayment which I just read is not guaranteed. !!!! What part of the country are you in?

I wouldn't approach it as letting them know they lowballed you, because there are clueless NPs out there willing to work for embarrassingly low wages so who knows how they came up with that figure. More along the lines of "$130 an hour is my current rate from XYZ and therefore I would need $ABC to consider making this move". Its always helpful if you know other NPs in the area and what they are making to add strength to your negotiation and so you aren't going into an area blind. I think the loan repayment is something that varies from year to year but I haven't heard of anyone who took a job with that intent and didn't receive the payment.

I work in a DC suburb. Feel free to PM me but I think this is a good topic to keep online for the sake of others who might benefit. There are so many new grads and all the low earning post masters FNPs jumping on the psych bandwagon that it is ruining the earning power of this specialty.

Jules trust me I don't want to do the profession a disservice not . When they call they t old me the pay grade for someone withbenefits 3 years exp is what I stated. They also have never hired an NP . All their providers have been PAs. They said they will have to convert the position to an NP position.

Also I'm trying to leave my current job at a hospital for various reasons asap. It's over an hour away. My days are very long due to this . I got a 5 year. I'm. Alone. Live in the country. I'm tired. Quality of life crappy . This job would be the opposite way and no traffic. More flexibility. I will negotiate rate next week. Even considering just working several days for benefits and working the other days at various other locations where I can work as a contractor under my own terms.

Like the part time.

My biggest consideration for this is location and that they are NHSC site. So I can apply for loan forgiveness. But after reading a blog about that. Not very promising. There are so many nurses who apply to it yearly and never get it.

If you are the first NP that might work to your benefit. Jeez so non psych NPs are practicing and PAs are also working in psych in your state? Thats unfortunate. We rarely see that here which also adds to our value. Collect rate information for NP jobs in your area to add to your current pay documents and present it. You will probably have to be patient as they work things out but if they need you they will pay. Doubtful it will be as nice as you are picturing it but will at least reduce your commute which is money too. Good luck.

So I had requested to shadow one of the providers to see what there day is like prior to considering taking a job. I spent a day with a PA. Seemed ok to me. They have 2 medical assistance. She said her usual census is 10-14 a day. There's a lot of no shows some times. The PA works for a psychiatrist who has a contract with them. They have not been able to obtain a providers on their own apparently. Not many people want to go to this location because it's rural. I happen to live in another rural two 20 miles away. But most providers live an hour + away. I would be their first employed NP. They had their HR person look at pay grades. If she went by online info. The crap online d doesnt help.

There's an extreme shortage of psych nps. And nps of any sort. Which is why pay should be better, you would think. I think they just don't know.

They allow nps to work in psych with collaboration. That's the state next door where job offer is.

My state allows nps to work in psych to treat within their scope of training that's why I refer anything complicated beyond depression, anxiety adhd, and uncomplicated bipolar. I do not treat with injectables etc. Once I complete the post masters certificate then that will change.

So my strategy is I am going to tell them that the truth. All other job offers I've had the lowest had been in the 95 range as contract so 53 with benefits pretty low.

Just risk not getting the job then if they are not willing to pay more .and then I could be stuck where I'm at which is worse when you add all the other variables. I'm soon to be a psych pt myself if I Stay working there. í ½í¸„

$53 an hour is a terrible rate in my opinion even for a FNP. I would be more proactive than just telling them you were offered $95 an hour as 1099 and also include the rate it would take to hire me.

Note to others: Don't back yourself in a corner and wait until your job is unbearable before starting to explore other options. Coming into negotiations from a position of desperation is never a good starting point.

I started this job this year!!!!. I didn't know the commute was going to be so bad. But you are right. Many variables thought. I'm not open to working in any other areas . Just want to work in psych. There's only so many opennings. I'm going to take your advised. I hope it doesn't backfire!!!!

Best wishes. Please let us know how things work out.

I'll let you know this week. Ive also applied to other contract jobs that are posted. I've been a bit nervous to open myself to fill my week with only those kinds of jobs but maybe that's what I should do.

I have to get out of current situation.

Thanks for all your advice and support!

Just some random numbers if this helps. I'm a psych RN in Fargo, ND. We had a travel nurse completing his PMHNP while working for us. As a new grad, they gave him $110,000 salary. About 4 months later, he moved to Washington state when a place out there offered $150,000 salary. Not sure about details beyond that.

I was a previous Health Administrator in jails in Oregon and California. Inmates with MH issues have to be seen within a certain number of days, their meds started within a certain number of days, and scheduled follow-ups within a certain number of days. NPs that were locum tenens made a LOT of money per hour, and their pay for on-call was high as well. Not all of them were on call. Have you considered working corrections? There is a shortage of MH providers in corrections and the pay is great. The locum tenens pay is much higher than if you work directly for the state/county or private medical provider as a full time or part time employee. Schedules were flexible as facilities have to work with the providers depending on what days/hours they are available.
