I am working 10 random days at a local high school to cover their special ed program. Only working 9:00 am- 1:00 pm so not too bad.

Advice please!
I am a school nurse at a small school with no guidance counselor to help. A student is going to confide in me that her parent is an alcoholic (according to friends). If I determine that parent is not endangering student, what help do I give her?

student extracurricular activities
If the parent cannot go, we would have to send a nurse. If we couldn't find a nurse then the entire trip is canceled.

Should I stay or should I go now...
Oh, no, I LOVE school nursing. I am at a small private school and I'm not as busy as I would like which means I'm often bored.

Nursing fields suited for physical limitations/chronic illness
I developed lymphedema in both legs that made bedside nursing too painful. I became a school nurse and I love it. Good luck!

Resource for the wee ones
Are you in Massachusetts? I am, and my school will become EEC soon. I'm in the same place as you.

Should I stay or should I go now...
I am happy but feel like I'm not making the most of my nursing skills (small school, less than 200 kids and I don't give even one daily med!). Salary and commute would be about the same.

Should I stay or should I go now...
Anyone else thinking about leaving their current job and moving on to another school next year? I work at a great private school but thinking of switching to public for the pension.

Storybook Character Day Nurse ideas?
I have a book, Nurse Clementine, about a little girl who wants to be nurse. Very cute!

When parents are not upfront on medical forms
Agree, it doesn't make sense and it happens all the time. I'm glad he had you to take care of him! Good job!

What brought you to where you are now?
I graduated with a communications degree right after high school, got married, and stayed home with the kids. By the time the youngest started kindergarten, I knew that nursing was something I wanted to pursue and so I did. I was working med-surg when I decided to try subbing at a high school. I hated every minute of it. A few months later, a quick surgical procedure left me with a punctured bowel and out of work for months thanks to a wound vac. I couldn't return to med surg because I was high risk of hernia. A local elementary school principal found me on LinkedIn. I interviewed and loved the job so much I got licensed in my state.

Lack of Manners
I have kids who come in and help themselves to my bandaids and ice packs without asking. Um, hello? I don't go through your locker so don't touch my stuff!

Fever Question - 5 yr old
I had a student with PFAPA- Period Fever, Aphthous Stomatitis, Pharyngitis, Cervical Adenitis. Would get a fever, go away and come back, and feel fine most of the time. Occasionally would have a minor sore throat.

Being the ONLY medical personnel
It was something I thought about often but as I got use to my job, I think of it less. I emailed the staff to see if anyone has any type of medical background. Janitor is a prior EMT and one teacher a former lifeguard. Maybe see if there is anyone else in the building who can assist in an emergency?

School Nurse Salary?
Hi Mila, I'm in Boston area, too. I started off as a sub to get my foot in the door. Didn't wind up working for the district but used the nurse manager as a reference. You may be able to get a permanent job with a private school without getting your LSN but pay is less. Public schools will require a LSN. See this link for steps to get LSN. Pretty easy and worth it if you know that's the avenue you want to go down. I only applied to one school and got the job but I've heard it's pretty easy to get a job as long as you have the LSN. Good luck! MSNO >> Licensure

Preparing for the unthinkable
My school is implementing ALICE. As the nurse, I am thinking what supplies can I leave in the classroom should the unthinkable happen. We are a small private school so fortunately I have a budget for these items. Do any of you have "Go Buckets?" What do you put in each room? Thanks!

What are your hours?

New Grad RN, Will being a school nurse lock me into never moving into acute care?
Are there medically complex students at the school? Mine has none so I volunteer for my county's medical reserve corps so I can keep my skills active. Good luck!

Welcome to Monday Morning.....
"I hurt my foot yesterday playing soccer. My parents said for you to look at it instead of going to the doctors." Of course, because I have a x-ray machine and radiologist at my disposal.

school nurse as a mom
Yes, I miss a few things I'd like to attend for my kids during the school day but I never have to worry about working Christmas, Thanksgiving, or other important holidays so it's a total win to me!

Massachusetts RNs
It's suppose to be coming online, too. I have not taken either. Do you get the district emails from DPH?

How do you store your inhalers/spacers???
I have pencil cases with inhaler/epi inside along with orders and care plans. Everything in the pencil box is inside a Ziplock bag so it's ready for field trips. Names are on cases and in alphabetical order.

Are you planning to retire from public schools?
You can retire in 15 years?!? I think you're in Mass like me. How is this possible? I've been torn between staying private or going public.
