I'd love to hear some comments from people with idea's on how to start fixing things. For those that agree it is real and in need of fixing...what can be done as 1 person and so on. I do think it starts with education. Perhaps bring some guided empathy somehow. All testing and cramming may be a burn out...perhaps assignments interviewing grandparents and asking how they felt as patients, did they notice decay in the care and system...something needs changed. Something needs to also bring nurses together. I noticed the cycle a bit today at work. 1 person was called out and a few of the nurses joined in right away. I don't get that at all. If you see yourself doing that...stop! I was approached by a charge nurse to see if I wanted to get on a list of nurses reporting a nurse we worked with...a list. Oh, she meant a paper trail. Any good manager would see a list and know right away that's a case of domino's...1 then 2 then 3 then more! I vow to not do this!

Let the next wave of nursing shortages begin. I hope the powers that be are reading :-) It won't happen to your hospital? You are to big? California is paying over 100.00 oder hour for nurses...no, really, they are. CPMC! Of course, California is about bankrupt from helping everyone and nobody can afford to live there, but as an agency nurse...go collect. I have to somewhat agree...the constant worry over scores and patient satisfaction is off the hook. My last ER travel assignment was in California. A patient's family literally said "we needed more entertainment for the patients and families." Sadly, she was serious. She said the last nurse joked around more than I did. I am a it dry witted but then again, I applied to nursing for my caring heart and skills. Maybe next job I'll ask if entertaining the patient's families are a requirement. Let me put this EKG, IV line, o2 needed and rest treatment on hold. Geez....figure it out people.

I have had cancer twice. I appreciate the article for what it is, informative. All patients are not the same as you have pointed out. The typical medications used for constipation do not always work on all people.

I do know the VA pays a premium for education. BSN, MSN etc. I don't think they view it as being a better nurse pay or doing more pay, but rather showing appreciation for furthering and paying for your own education in the form of compensation. If a manager looks over your resume and notes you have spent time on CEU's even when not necessary and have been on committees, went the extra mile in educating yourself and have other skills, they may have a good stance for the pay increase.

That is awesome, but not for me. I paid the monthly rate yesterday. Now to figure out how to change name color and the nice perks of it all.

Go under specialty up top and you will find a CRNA category. In yellow at top it shows, nurses then specialties...they may have better knowledge :-)

I wish I could provide some sort of guidance, but I did not go that route. With that said, I would do it in a heart beat! Just do your research. I great place to start is calling around different schools that offer the program and talk with the program chair about it. Good luck, sounds great
