Has anyone ever 'taped' a gravity feed?

All our garage feelings are via syringe pump, unless the feeding is so small that it will run by gravity in a minute or less.

    My story

I would say that is a correct observation. I am currently struggling with treatment for acute exasberation of chronic tendonitis (PTT) for the last 5 months. It is very discouraging, and I am not certain that I will be able to keep doing my job for a...

    Visitation during handoff

NICUGal wrote: "Open. Our legal department deems it "incidental overhearing". Alrighty. Parents and visitors can be at the bedside, but we do have a letter we give them upon admission to please try to not interrupt us so that we don't forget anything...

    Cooling Blanket for HIE

Yes, they are allowed only under the blanketrol, and then, loosely (not tightly securing the baby). Don't really see it used much, as these babies are older in gestational age; also they are sedated.

Question? PA vs NP to work with healthy newborns in OB?

No NNP's in my NICU. I have worked places where NICU's did use them. Pediatrician's do the circs. Well newborn checks are done by pediatricians, neonatologists, or an occasional PNP. The clinics out of the hospital system use some PA's. I haven't s...

    RN IBCLC advice

Rat lady, if you really want the holistic approach, have you considered taking a midwife program? There are RN and non-RN programs. I'm an NICU RN that just sat for the IBCLC.

    attn: experienced NICU RNs---

Bortaz, Wow, I so agree. I really appreciate that you took the time to write all of that out and share it. And, I might add, and then there is the ever-increasing and time-consuming documentation of all of the above work. I started in NICU right out ...

Is it difficult for men to get into NICU?

I worked with a number of men in NICU in a variety of units. Yes, they are a minority, but it is really great to have them. I would love to see more men in the NICU. It helps to even the estrogen level; and many families really enjoy having the male ...

    That Dreaded 3-11 Shift

I have worked all the shifts 8 and 12 hours, as well as 10 hr shifts (nice but not efficient for the hospital). I haven't done the 2-12-hr wknd shifts @ 40 hr pay. I've been working as an RN for over 33 years. I did 12 hr shifts for many years. I've ...

    NAS

haven't ever seen mom/baby care like you mention. We usually have 2 or 3 infants in assignment, but hopefully, only 1 is withdrawing; they are difficult patients to manage.

New to NICU, but not nursing...

I really think a NICU orientation of a good number of weeks is important for success in this field, it is too bad that hospitals don't have the resources to do that. I think I had 12 weeks when I started NICU in 1979 (6 classroom, 6 in the unit). Unf...

    When does it get better??

The first year is particularly grueling. I remember, I used to have to go home and look things up on a regular basis, to try to keep up with the over-whelming knowledge base to learn. I can remember waking up hours early, unable to go back to sleep, ...

    HELP! NRP Questions

If the baby doesn't respond to tactile stimulation, it is in secondary apnea, and all the stimulation in the world isn't going to make it breathe; it needs PPV. A self-inflating bag can be used to give ventilations, without a gas source, so, unlike a...

    Funny Names

I have taken care of twins: Limoncello and Oranjello. We had triplets: Promise, Precious, and ? (can't remember). The worst name, and this was real, I took care of this baby: Cluster Fluck (first and last name for a boy).

    Tattoos and nursing

Some hospitals are more conservative than others about this. I would say, cover up to start with, and check the culture out as you go. It is certainly much more comman to see visible tattoos than it used to be. I have 2 that I got after being a nurse...
