  1. I would say at the high school, the policies were followed strictly at first except, the big one, no one took temps at the doors. The supt. was going back and forth about the body scanners but didn't do anything. He was/is relying on the parent to screen them before the leave home. Nope, they're not doing that. Instead now as of Feb-Apr, more are coming to school already ill and they know it. smh. Mom needs to go work. Mom wants the nurse to excuse to go home or see if you make it and then go to the nurse. What! These are half-grown teens with parents trying to come test on state test, sick, to get into college. What! So I'm looking forward to the end of this year. Oh yeah, they are using "smart passes" to go to the restroom, etc but I have to remind them when they show up at my door, that they need to go back for a "clinic pass". They were supposed to call before they send them but 1% has done that. Goodbye 20-21!
  2. So Summer is coming, not far up the road. What are going to be doing? I'm getting invites for Summer camp nursing, Summer school, Summer conferences. oh my... I just need off. Rest. ?Travel to see family. What are you signing up for? Please tell.

I read the comments and wanted to throw my 2 cents in since most were asking her to stay and not transfer to work with the teachers. I would say if you like the location, staff and feel comfortable with the routine other than the visit load, I would stay and work with them to get the numbers down. If on the other hand, you would like the other location better or know that the other staff are fairly tolerable or better with the lower visit load, I would go for it. I could say to the supervisor that I desire to transfer to the other elementary where I would have more time to educate the students without feeling rushed. I desire to utilize my teaching programs and feel I could implement them at such-and-such school. I want to be more innovative and use my creative skills there rather than here as I feel I am at that point in my career. I am trying to advance my nursing skills and my personal autonomy with this transfer request. Thank you for your consideration.
  4. I personally have had to train the after-school teacher with a sign-off sheet of training and give them a tote of supplies that comes from the parent.
  5. Hi, you've already gotten so many great answers. I personally have worked at all grade levels. So for elementary, with a new type 1, I would prefer the student eat in my office for a while with the parent's permission. Of course, the older kids would be taught to come to check the level and tell me on the lunch menu I have printed, what they would choose. Then I would follow-up with often.
  6. Education or Management unless you hope to go further later in the clinical setting.
  7. No, I am not sending them home just for headaches. They usually have to have at least another identifying symptom of covid or my judgment entails going home. The parent will be called if it is severe and not better after vitals, rest, water, or a history.
  8. No, they haven't and no, I don't want to. They have a local clinic doing assigned as a one-time offering this week, thank you.
  9. Yes, I'm returning, and no I haven't been given any time bonus other than the one-time bonus all teachers got at the beginning of September. We have had a few leave but the district believes the community has waiting people to help to fill it.
  10. Not here because of the student's possible drowsiness and the need to watch over narcotics in a school setting that falls under legal consequences to the scholars.

Yesssssss! 70 days including weekends and Holidays! Count downtime. Thought about Camp Nurse but since school will probably return at the End of July, I'm Chillin ?
  12. Just my two cents. I believe with an investigation, most get a warning for first offenders with no serious injury to the student/patient. Also, it depends upon, repeat nurses, type of medicine, duration received, and the response from the supervisor and family. Meaning if it was an antiacid maybe it would be just a warning from the supervisor. The investigation could be a couple of months or so. If you or the lawyer didn't agree with the outcome at the informal settlement conference, it could go before a public hearing. I think most people would agree that one, the pill does come in a white and round form as the other, and two, the parent caused confusion with an identically-looking pill issued to the clinic. I believe you will be OK but it is scary to go through the process. Realize, that any other prudent nurse could have done the same thing. A sub could have easily done this, not knowing how the previous pill looked. I might would call the pharmacy on the bottle and report it to use as evidence for the board. You could also get another job before it goes through investigation if you think the supervisor has it out for you. Go with your gut feeling. Quote, "Sounds like supervisor knew something was not right." I wouldn't be surprised to find that the parent or someone else reported you to the supervisor when the error was discovered. Prayers to you for a speedy great ending!

  14. I had been getting the bad push back at the beginning from the teachers wanting to know who was quarantined from their classroom and feeling their rights and safety were being infringed upon. Finally, Admin sent out a memo telling the teachers that the HIPAA law wouldn't allow names to be disclosed and that the nurses were doing this extra duty put upon them. Essentially saying, leave them alone they're doing what has been asked by the CDC rules. A few parents with students involved in sports usually gave us an ear full on the phone but most parents were cordial and willing to oblige to what we requested them to do. P.S. we have adopted the shorter quarantine, not by the nurse supervisor's advice but the Supt. made this decision. Prob. why she is resigning, I mean retiring next month. Now after 10 days, they all truck into the clinic to have temps checked, smh. Exposing us more.
  15. I feel like everything is on standby. Fun, freedom, and adventure. I go to the same places, mostly curbside or takeout. I try to find projects to work on at home, not school-related. We have reported working in-person since Sept. I wish we could work remotely. I am a 3-year widow, so I make rounds to check on the yard, house outside and inside, vehicles. If everything is fine, I do fun recipes and go grocery shopping. I call around and check on family members far and near and then, my friends. I got off FB because I favor actual real relationships. My favorite relaxing thing to do is get in my truck and drive a short trip to a park, get take-out and eat at the park. It refreshes my mind and gets me out of the house with fresh air. I also sew fun masks for me and my family members.
  16. No, I don't want that headache besides, I'm counting toward retirement days even more now. I think they would feel better to keep things in check knowing if left to the masses, it may be different roads for each his own. Somethings I do think is over documentation. So I could see the aides calling different ones getting different answers. I don't know if it would be better to get a new leader or one amongst us who knows the ritual, not including me, of course. We will see. ?
  17. I work at a high school with around 2400 students and we have 2 separate nurse offices. We used to just alternate medications that came in and whoever got that student would do that iep, 504, or ihp. Our phone lines are joined meaning that I can see all the extension calls and whenever she goes to lunch, I answer those calls. We split the classrooms up and downstairs by proximity with half going both ways. I have file cabinets for half the grades as she does. I have a walkie talkie as she does for communication by phone or walkie. I have a printer and copier as she does. The counselors or staff usually cc us both on emails. We try to alternate incoming calls. Hope this helps.
  18. No, they promised us at my high school of 2000 plus but we never got it. They depend on the parents to do it before coming to school. Not enough staff to oversee the wall scanners. I see many on Amazon that attaches to walls ranging around 90 bucks. They probably are just as accurate as of the forehead ones we hold. duh
  19. 1. spending more time with family at the house, really listening to them 2. taking a break from the fast auto-pilot life's daily running around without thinking 3. reading my bible more 4. fewer kids coming to the clinic just to get out of class

Usually, new rollouts, like staff vaccines are announced on the main school page or in the Supt of Schools email directly to the staff after the collaboration of the nurse supervisor. Even the updates or delays are handled by Admin. not the nurse. This should not be on your shoulders alone. That sounds like a few rude ungrateful staff people. I would ask the dept of health how to send out a notice of the delay with the vaccines to you pass along.
  21. Wow, we just got informed that our Nurse Supervisor is retiring, in 4 weeks! A shocker. Well, she is 66 but she's held our hands and the district for 14 years. Her health has started to decline lately and the new Admin has not been listening to her on all things covid. What are we 20 health staff going to do? She oversees our meetings, orders supplies, sends updates on forms and CDC changes, reminds us of our recertifications, etc. She's our go-to person when principals, parents or the community gives us push back. She doesn't know when or if they will replace her. This district is not small or huge but it is very spoiled and handled with white kid gloves. We have about 10,000 students and staff in total. With covid CDC changes, we have a spreadsheet to hunt down the student or staff to check temps when they return after a 10-day quarantine. We have a hotline for them to call over the weekend and evening to the supervisor and 2 others that rotate when they don't feel well. If we don't return parent calls within an hour, they call and report it to her. Real spoiled. So, what are we going to do for the rest of the year? Oh my.
  22. Well, ...well, well. Following up finally. Texas just reacted and gave us some way overdue guidance on the school screenings. Yes, so on Jan. 13, 2021, yep that was yesterday, the Texas Department of Health Services finally addressed what we've been looking for, for months regarding the big mass screening event of the year. Hear's what they said, in a nutshell. "So, (in my old lady's PTA voice), in light of this pandemic, even though screenings are still required this school year, be flexible and careful if space permits but parents can decline this year." YEAH! Ooops. Ooops. I mean ahh. She continues, "send this sample letter so they can go to their doctor or schedule with you IF they sense a problem with vision or hearing as described in this letter." YEAH Again! Ooops, too late, we already sent a similar letter to the parents around the holidays waiting on you. Hahaha. I sent almost 60 letters with attached forms and guess what? Not one reply. smh
  23. We just finished a nurse group Zoom Mtg. We were asked how we felt about taking the covid vaccine per the school Supt. Wow, didn't expect that on a Monday. The school nurse? Wow, it's like your life flashes before your eyes for the present and for the future. You think about your family, this job, and your potential risks. Risks, I barely know the covid-19 contact risks. Vaccine. What's in it? There was the trial of 40k and I think 6 people died. I heard 2 had gotten Bell's Palsy or something. I don't know enough about it. Most of us said we'll wait. I heard the White House suddenly decided that they would wait as well. Now, look-a-hear, why would they wait? They don't usually step back to let others eat first. I'm just trying to lay all the cards out on the table. Also, there was mention of us administering the vaccine to students. Students? I feel the parent should be present for such a controversial rushed vaccine don't you? What are your thoughts? Will you take it? Will it be the lesser evil? Undecided for now.
  24. My take is, the White House suddenly decided they were not going to take the Pfizer covid vaccine and would wait until a later time got me to thinking that they would not dare to decline something very beneficial.
  25. Yes, it's now trying to out-compete pretty much everything I do. I'm hoping she finds promotion somewhere else.
