  1. I have parents complete the district medication forms for all medications that the student would be taking on the trip. The parents would bring only the amount of medication needed for the trip. The same district policies that are followed on the campus are also followed on the field trip.
  2. I searched hard and could not find one speck of pink. It's off to the uncool table for me ?

Bumping this thread for the upcoming school year. Please post any links to sites that offer free samples for schools. I know this goes back years, and I can't find it in the threads anywhere, but someone posted a link to a site where you could order free samples of lotions and other products. Any sites you are aware of would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Unfortunately, you found this board when most school nurses are off for the Summer. School nursing is a specialty area. It's not like any other type of nursing. Many times you are isolated and are the only medical professional in the building. If you are feeling lonely, are you able to walk into the office and talked with the other staff members? You were drawn to school nursing for a reason. Try to figure out if that is still the job duties and hours you want. Which job has less stress and fits your lifestyle the best? To be quite honest, not everyone enjoys school nursing. My suggestion would be to way the pros and cons and see which job works best for you. School nursing has a huge learning curve and does get better after the 1st year. I hope this helped you a little bit, good luck to you on which ever job you choose is best for you.
  5. Happy School Nurse's Day! I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
  6. These are Texas TEA guidelines for establishing policies for sending students home. Try checking your ISD's specific board policies. Many boards adopt policies written by the state's education agency. You can also search the education agency's policy website for specific topics (I.e. Texas has specific policies for diabetic care, and epilepsy care at school.) Hope this helps you get started. Texas Administrative Code Exclusion Code.pdf HEALTH AND SAFETY CODE CHAPTER 168. 7. Hate to see you go! Good luck with all your future endeavors. ?
  8. Happy School Nurse Day!
  9. I have not had a student with narcolepsy, but both of my children have been diagnosed with it. They both take medication to stay awake during the day. Without the meds it is very difficult for them to stay awake. For your student, you need to communicate with the parents and get a plan from the doctor. It would be very difficult to know if the student is sleeping or experiencing something else. (When my kids are sleeping, it is very difficult to wake them up.)
  10. Hi, here are some Texas Codes and Guidelines. Medication administration in Texas can be delegated to non-licensed school personnel as long as they have been trained and medication check-off has been completed. I hope this helps. 11. I'll be sitting at the cool table all year. I bought myself a pair of tennis shoes with pink on them that I'll wear everyday. ?

I can identify with everything you are saying. Yes to feeling bored. I'm 8 years into school nursing with 7 years left until retirement. Over the Summer I looked at other nursing jobs, but I really like the school schedule. So, I guess I'm here for 7 more years. ?

    Congrats!
  15. I'm back for year 8, and contemplate leaving everyday. I just figure how to make money rescuing dogs and drinking wine. I hope Covid starts to settle down. this has been the craziest year, and we are only six weeks in.
  16. I will get on the floor and do deep breathing exercises with them initially (I feel that getting down on their level helps them relax instead of standing over and looking down to them) Once they are feeling better we will walk around the school or rest in the clinic, which ever they say they want. I will try to re-direct their thinking by asking questions about what they like to do at home, what are their hobbies, do they have animals, etc... I really like this! I am going to try this next time.
  17. I had a teacher come to my clinic to have her temperature taken. Argued with me that her symptoms were only allergies. I strongly encouraged her to go to urgent care to be evaluated and tested. Results=Covid + ?
  18. BAM! (in the words of old dude) Great job! It was only anti-climatic because you were there to do what needed to be done. Great job!

    Congratulations!
  20. Happy School Nurse's Day! We have weathered the storm, and it will be over soon (the school year that is).
  21. I have not and will not apologize for following the guidelines established by the school board. We are trying to keep our schools open in the middle of a pandemic. We have been F2F (optional) since August and have done well keeping the positive numbers low. If a student comes to the clinic c/o multiple symptoms possibly RT Covid, they are going home. It is not my job to call the student a liar and not believe their symptoms, that is a discussion the parent needs to have with their child.
