  1. Simple Solutions to Everyday Problems

Work on your McGyver skills! A piece of cut oxygen tubing makes a great bypass for a split PEG tube that can't be replaced right away. Lopez valves are your friends on ALL NG and PEG tubes if your policy allows. Try to get all your charting done by...
  2. Had a horrible weekend...

It's a lesson you'll never forget. Potassium can cause extreme extravasation if it gets outside a vein. Central line concentrations tend to be higher than peripheral line concentration bags (example: KCL 40meq in 250mlNS for central, but diluted in...
  3. We use primary care. There is an RN and a CNA assigned to each patient.
  4. Health First charting

Hello everyone. Has anyone worked for Health First in the Melbourne, FL area? They own Palm Bay, Viera, Holmes Regional, and Cape Canaveral Hospitals. Pros/cons, floors to avoid? Do you know what charting system they use (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, ...
  5. Tampa/Plant City/Zephyrhills hospitals

Hi all, Was just looking for information on Tampa area hospitals. Basic pay for 5 year ADN/RN, shift differentials, nurse : patient ratios, cleanliness, BSN requirements (must have within 5 years type stuff)? I'm also interested in knowing if they hi...
  6. Tampa/Plant City/Zephyrhills hospitals

Thanks for the answer. I got just about the same answer from someone else in a private message. Really thinking about trying Baycare as my own "instate travel assignment" this winter to see if I like it.
  7. Correct way to draw blood?

Is it an IV, or a midline that sometimes looks like a peripheral IV? We can draw blood from midlines, but you'd never know it was a midline unless you looked closely at the tubing. It would look like we were drawing out of a regular IV.
  8. Does anyone really read all this charting?

    Lawyers.
  9. The Men in OB Debate: Help!

Go for it! I think it's great. Women have male OBGYN docs all the time, so why is a nurse being male always made into a big deal? I've never understood that part of it. If you are a good nurse, I don't care if you are male or female.
  10. Demoted from ICU to IMCU

Thanks. I appreciate it. Everywhere I've worked just called it stepdown.
  11. Demoted from ICU to IMCU

    Someone educate me, what's IMCU?
  12. Husband is not ready for me to go to nursing school!!

Just go to school. The two of you will need to figure out why he is so upset, but don't give up on these dreams just to pacify him. If he was already in school, it would be a different story, but he's not. Sounds like he's acting childish at your e...
  13. Is leaving before hurricane abandonment?

Check with your facility. Ours has a policy that if one parent is "law enforcement" and the other is hospital personnel, you can be considered exempt because there isn't anyone to care for your children.
  14. Travel Nursing Dilemma(Sorry long post)

As a chemo certified nurse, if you've never done it or been exposed to it, it's difficult to find a groove at a new facility unless they are willing to teach you. Some facilities don't want travelers giving chemotherapy. I'd want to talk to the actu...
  15. Plz don't say.....Are you ok?

Is it wrong of me that when I see a kid fall, trip, or get a small bump/cut, I say nothing...I just wait. If they start to cry, I do not go to them, I make them get up and come to me (unless it's really bad). I figure that way, they have to compose...
  16. Burned out on night shift

I've been a nurse for over 3 years, always on nights. I've always worked med/surg with a specialty in oncology, which basically means we prefer to have currently being treated oncology patients on the floor that have med/surg issues, but we also do...
  17. Contacted multiple times for same empty shift

I'm on vacation. I left a note on the schedule not to call me between date A &B. They called two days into my vacation. I contacted a coworker to put the note BACK on the schedule that someone had removed, because, obviously, they didn't get my...
  18. What is your dream job?

    Baseball scout.
  19. Accusation Against Male Nurse (Me)

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I don't see anything wrong with your actions. Yes, you may have blocked a door, which may have been intimidating, but I wasn't there, so I don't know how Jen felt about it. I don't know your size or hers, the bod...
  20. No longer enjoying my "dream" job.

Can you afford to go per diem while the baby is young, then you could pick your shifts? What about going to work in a obstetrics office for a bit while the baby is young so you can get a 9-5 type job but still be with pregnant moms?
  21. Question about Car insurance policy for home health nurses

As a former insurance adjuster, I can tell you that you should have a business policy if you are using your car for work and being reimbursed mileage, etc, for more than 2 trips a week. If you get in an accident, they can refuse to provide coverage ...
  22. I had a moment!

All through nursing school, residency/orientation/precepting, everyone tells you, it takes at least a year to feel like you have a clue, 3-5 to feel like you are a competent nurse. Well, I HAD MY MOMENT! Let me start by saying we are a big hospita...
  23. I had a moment!

I found this post again tonight when I've been having some "what if" moments. It made me remember why I do this.
  24. New Grad BSN

Most hospitals in that area do their new grad interviews/applications WAY in advance, so make sure you look early. I think Duke/UNC only put them out early in the month - like from 1st-5th. Try Rex in Raleigh area too. They do lots of new grad stuf...
  25. Pet Peeve Friday

I'm not a school nurse, but my pet peeve is fellow nurses who come to you with "room XXX said you didn't look very happy and didn't talk to her very nicely when he asked for Dilaudid and Ativan at that same time." Especially after that same nurse ha...
