    Preceptors

In IL, I used the IL Society of Advance Practice Nurses - they keep a list

Have you ever returned to an old job?

Yes, I worked at one place for 11 years, thought I wanted something different so left it. Was absolutely miserable - difficult boss, boring job. So I went back to old job after 6 months and have been there 5 years now so 16+ years total

    New NP position

Yes very much so. We have 10 APRNs and our longevity is 2-23 years with most of us having >5 years in our present position

    Ageism in Nursing

I echo Tweety's comments: what are you looking for? I'm almost 65 and I've not experienced ageism at least...not yet. I plan to work much longer. I do know that as an APRN my value is not based on my age but rather on my knowledge and my ability...

    New NP position

I work in a large nephrology practice. Our orientation is 5-6 months long as it takes that long to get credentialing done. It consists of didactic as well as shadowing. Most of our APRNs have been here >5 years and several of us have been here >...

Greetings, Younglings, from a Crusty Old Bat

I've been a nurse since 1992 and agree with most of what you say. What I find for me (and I'm working past 65 now) is that with the increasing pressures and job demands being put on nurses and all healthcare staff, I don't get the same satisfac...
  7. I have not changed specialties but when I graduated, I went from ED to nephrology. It was a huge change and learning curve. However, I looked at the practice and the longevity of the APRNs. I've been there 17 years and most have been here >5 years...
  8. Great info! My own viewpoint is that of a nephrology APRN. Providers must always consider a pts renal function prior to prescribing many of the osteoporosis meds. These meds are typically long-lasting (6months for some) and can result in profoun...

    Seeking Advice When Receiving Orders

Totally agree Wuzzie. My incident was in 2006 when bullying was much less of a "thing" then now. Should have been a "thing" then as well

    Seeking Advice When Receiving Orders

I'm an APRN and though I work in a different specialty I often do electronic orders for procedures. I never mind a nurse calling me over anything I write orders for. I would much rather have a phone call then have a pt near miss or have a bad outcome...
  11. What has she done to remediate her lack of awareness when administering high risk meds? Has she kept up with current practice?

    NP Contract & Second Jobs

I no longer have a contract as I have independent practice now. However, yes, in my initial contract 17 years ago I had to inform my boss if I took an additional job - didn't matter if it was nursing related - just any additional job.
  13. I don't think its overkill. However, who has the final say in hiring decisions? HR or the manager?

    Clinical Manager offer

Whats the overall outlook in your area for dialysis chairs? I'm in Illinois in a very large nephrology practice. We go to 17 outpt dialysis units (FMC and Davita). However, staffing is so low that the smaller units RNs float to other units to "help o...

    The New eGFR Calculation

Correct! Social determinants of health show NEVER govern needed care.

    The New eGFR Calculation

In 2020 research began to circulate that using a different calculation for determining eGFR or estimated glomerular filtration rate with adjustment for race was incorrect and led to much inequity in many realms of care. The Cleveland Clinic tells us ...

    Clinically Inexperienced Manager

We are experiencing such a shortage of dialysis staff that the big two, both Fresenius and Davita are looking to close units leaving patients in rural areas in dire straits. Its certainly desirable to have a clinically competent manager...

    Is ARNP worth it?

Agree with Klone: 1. Why do you want to be an advanced practioner? 2. What are your goals a few years down the line? 3. Do you have an area that you are interested in working? 4. Have you talked to other APRNs in your area? ...

    Clinically Inexperienced Manager

Just as an aside, Davita which is one of the big two in outpt dialysis does not require a manager to have nursing experience, just some type of leadership skills. Many places hire for business acumen vs clinical skill. I think its a plus to hav...

    Phasing Out ADN?

I did the whole LPN to ADN to BSN to MSN to post-MSN certificates At least for me, the BSN did NOT make me a better nurse - it made me poorer due to school loans. Having to pass "fluff" classes doesn't equate to better nursing. Add more pathophy...

allnurses Defeats Test Prep Firm in Defamation Lawsuit

Been a member for >20 years now. This lawsuit caused immeasurable grief. There's something wrong with our legal system when this is allowed to happen. BTW I did leave a review

New grad to NP. Is it a mistake?

Can't like this enough. We are a commodity like a chair, table. If we can't make money, we are not gonna make it. IMHO, there should be far more business classes in any and all APRN degrees. We need to know what we are worth. That said, I had 1...

Good question - I tried to look it up but came up with nothing.

Should I withdraw from CRNA school?

I'm not an SRNA/CRNA but I think if you talk with other SRNAs many feel this way. However, you say your mental health is an issue. From your post, I get the idea that mental health is more than being an SRNA? Perhaps you need some outside help?
