  1. What are the top 10 diagnoses you manage?

COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, cellulitis, DKA,UTI, Cdiff, neutropenia (work on a med oncology floor), and some surprising cases of aseptic meningitis. And very soon lots of flu cases. I'm sure there is more but there are the most common ones
  2. How did your employer recognize Nurse's Day?

I got ice cream, pen/pen light , and a badge clip with the hospital name on it.
  3. Am I right in my thinking working on the dementia unit?

That is tough. I work on an inpatient gero psych unit with alot of dementia patients. While they have a right to refuse cares, it is usually because they don't know what is going on. We are taking care of them and that includes keeping them clean. I...
  4. Zyprexa and Ativan IM Compatibility - (Haldol Allergy)

The pharmacy at my hospital always tells us not to mix Zyprexa and Ativan. There aren't many things compatible with Ativan. But luckily haldol is!
  5. Emergency Psychiatric Medications

On my unit we use Haldol, Ativan, and Zyprexa as emergency IM meds. Never Benadryl because it actually makes dementia patients more agitated.
  6. Having to count Risperidone

I've noticed that in the past couple months that you have to count Risperidone. It requires a count just like the narcs, but does not require a witness to waste. Has anyone else encountered this?
  7. Compression stockings or not

I just wear knee high socks, they are snug enough and cheaper. Maybe I'll look into the real ones though.
  8. med cart keys

I've taken the treatment cart keys home and didn't realize it to the morning. Funny nobody realized either haha.
  9. "Houston we have a problem" This just got very real

All of this just makes me feel so uneasy. Our government has really dropped the ball.
  10. "Houston we have a problem" This just got very real

They always blame the nurses! I can't see a nurse who knows she will care for a patient with Ebola not taking all the precautions necessary. While it could've been a simple honest mistake I feel that there is something missing to this story. Scary.
  11. What went wrong with my IM injection?

That happens doesn't mean you did anything wrong. Imagine hitting a bone during an emergency IM administration to an agitated patient. Worst feeling.
  12. Name a disease/cond. for my research paper

I had a project like this in Microbiology. I picked Ebola. So maybe that or another interesting yet relevant disease like Malaria.
  13. Is this crazy? Nurse to Pt. ratio

That sounds scary! So you pass meds for 20 pts? That is a lot. When I worked in LTC my med pass was for 30-35 pts depending on census and that was stressful. Being the only nurse for that many pts would make me so anxious! So much responsibility!
  14. Is nursing in practice this different from school?

I work on a psychiatric unit and have never done this or witnessed any of my nurses doing this. It's wrong, and god forbid it's a fatal dose. Lots of explaining to do!!
  15. Does anyone else have nursing nightmares while sleeping?

The other night I had a dream I forgot to give all my patients their morning meds and realized at around 1 in the afternoon. The next day at work I was double and triple checking that I got everything done.
  16. Would you hold Lantus?

Honestly I would give it, it's not that low and Lantus provides long acting coverage wouldn't drop the blood sugar
  17. Just letting you know ...

I didn't know that! It's important to remember that verbal and emotional abuse is just as detrimental as physical abuse. From both personal experience and working in a psychiatric environment I have learned it's important to screen and counsel for bo...
  18. NH Residents without ID bands

I've worked in two nursing homes as a nurse and both weren't very strict on name bands. When I first started it was hard to remember who was who but after orientation I knew who everyone was. We also had pictures but they were black and white bad gra...
  19. Your Family?

Haha! But yeah it is terrifying! Most of them are driving still which is more scary. But it is also very sad.
  20. Your Family?

A lot actually. It is sad most is either early onset or ETOH induced dementia.
  21. Your Family?

I think I work on a unit similar to the one you'll be starting on. It's a geriatric inpatient psychiatry floor. It's for 55 + and most of the patients we get have a dementia dx. They come mostly because of aggression and the place where they were can...
  22. What are the top 5 medications YOU administer daily?

Yes psych! Gero-psych actually. So basically nobody under 50 years of age.
  23. What are the top 5 medications YOU administer daily?

Haldol, Ativan, Seroquel, Depakote, and Zypreza. Guess what type of floor! Haha
  24. Resume format/template

Anyone know of a good resume format or template? I don't like my current one and need to update it soon. Should I list my jobs and the responsibilities or just the jobs? And is it really bad if it goes over a page? Thanks for your help!
  25. Nursing and then some to MD?

I'm not sure about the requirements, but if your really interested in becoming a MD why don't you start on that path now?
